Hoodoo Gurus, Stems and Lime Spiders were on top of their game and labels like Waterfront and Citadel put out albums and 45’s that most music aficionados would die for. The Spliffs formed in Townsville, a small city on the northeastern coast of Queensland in Australia. In 1986 they unleashed their debut 45. Recorded all by themselves and released DIY style they got some rave reviews and got to play Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane opening for The Saints and Hoodoo Gurus. Their debut single is fab jangly 80’s powerpop right up there with Plimsouls or The Nerves. Housed in a deluxe picture sleeve that comes with a printed inner sleeve filled with many rare and previously unpublished photos plus an interview with Spliffs main man and guitar-slinger Jamie Forsberg conducted by power pop guru Ric Menck.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/6b2223e7-3d2d-47d7-8f4f-a3f89b20d52a_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727199032
new-wave-jack-the-lad
New Wave / Jack the Lad

Back in 1977 with Punk and New Wave in full swing Brian Carroll and his partner in musical crime Damon Lyon-Shaw decided to do something about it. The duo had been working together since the 60s with Carroll working at a cutting engineer at IBC Studios. Carroll was a Mod and was unimpressed when Chas Chandler brought in Jimi Hendrix with him for Carroll to cut his first single ‘Hey Joe’. Only when he played it and then cut it in front of them did Carroll realise that Hendrix was special. Carroll also cut most of the early singles by the Who.

As a sideline, Carroll wrote, produced and released material with his collaborator Damon Lyon-Shaw. Bands like The Factory and Five Day Rain whose records hardly sold but are not collectable. Recording under their own steam as One Way Ticket, an album of their material was released by President in 1978 called Time Is Right.

Winding back to 1977, Carroll and Lyon-Shaw decided to record a ‘punk’ record called ‘New Wave’. When they had finished recording New Wave they shopped it around and Simon Napier-Bell was interested in putting it out under the band name Robin Gobbing. Sadly nothing happened and the song was lost in the mists of time.

Back in 2017 Ian Shirley put out an album of unreleased One Way Ticket material for Record Collector. He loved New Wave but it’s direct and abrasive nature just did not fit with the other material on the album The same applied to Jack The Lad which he loved and thought would one day make a perfect B-side to New Wave. Now, finally comes New Wave and Jack The Lad out on a limited edition single.

With his cockney accent and sense of humour to the fore, New Wave its a brilliant track. Carroll’s humour is very much to the fore examining not only this new musical form but the bands who changed direction to jump on the bandwagon. The music is also -from a punk/new wave perspective - superb. The flip side - Jack The Lad - is even more delicious with Carroll’s vocals delighting in the subject of being a bloke around town. It’s like Sham 69 wresting with Blur.

This is a limited edition white label release in a hand-folded picture sleeve.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/NonDisc2550_9ec56600_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727583068
the-trend-is-in
The Trend Is In

The Trend is high explosive, hyperactive teenage powerpop. The Trend hailed from Kennett, Missouri and was formed back in 1979. Aged fifteen to sixteen at the time, and armed with guitars, striped t-shirts, skinny ties, tambourines and colorful drainpipe trousers. The Trend (Is In) was a full on powerpop and bubblegum-explosion. One self-released (and nowadays mega-rare) album in 1982 and a just-as-hard-to-find 7-inch single from the previous year was all that The Trend unleashed on record during their short lifespan. Since then, appearances on compilations like Yellow Pills and Numero’s Buttons have made sure The Trend is in high demand amongst powerpop aficionados all over the world. Trend’s debut 45 “She’s Hi-Fi” b/w “Lucky Day” is blistering class AAA powerpop that will most likely make anyone with the slightest interest in the genre strip off all clothes and do the helicopter. “The Girl At The Holiday In” shows that The Trend had moved on since the single. So much so that “The Girl I Used To Know” could have been recorded by one of the then contemporary Paisley Underground bands from Los Angeles. “Real Cheap Thrill” is raging Merseybeat-pop-mayhem bordering to killed by death-punk. “Two Plus Two” is suffused with the spirit of late 1960s Paul McCartney. Above all, The Trend is about direct, driving upbeat pop. “Go For Broke” could have clicked as a single, while “Southsiders (Waiting To Go Northside)” caught The Trend’s outlook in a nutshell: “power pop, bubblegum, punk rock, here we come.” Housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve that comes with a printed inner sleeve richly illustrated with rare and previously unpublished photos. In the extensive liner notes The Trend’s main man and song writer John McMullan tells the full story to Kieron Tyler (Mojo Magazine).
