During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Fatman and Black Symbol helped to put Birmingham's Handsworth area firmly on the reggae map with a series of Black Symbol singles and three albums  in conjunction with other local artists, including the two legendary volumes of \"Handsworth Explosion\" mostly released on the band's own eponymous label. Over the last forty years, those original Black Symbol releases have grown in status as more and more people discovered them via our comprehensive reissue campaign. \u003ci\u003eJourney\u003c\/i\u003e was produced by Paul Horton for Ecks Productions. Paul has twice been nominated for a Grammy Award for his work on Steel Pulse's \"Victims\" and Pato Banton's \"Life Is a Miracle.\" Although the music benefits from Paul's experience and knowledge of the latest production techniques, he was careful to ensure that the music recalls the Black Symbol of old retaining that original spiritual edge. Spiritual is the best word to describe this collection of eight songs and an instrumental version and there couldn't be a more apt title than \u003ci\u003eJourney\u003c\/i\u003e, our lives are a journey. Fatman's journey has taken him from St. Ann's, Jamaica to Handsworth, England and increasingly he looks towards Ethiopia and Africa. It is a recurring theme throughout the songs on this collection. When Fatman sings \"Mama Africa,\" he sings of Africa as his homeland just as much as Jamaica or England. Fatman rejects the corruption of modern society, we must come away from the \"muddy water\" and drink from the pure spring of Rastafari. Fatman is not afraid to proclaim his faith throughout this album, in fact that is exactly how he begins with the track \"I'm not Afraid\" with more positive, uplifting, and spiritual messages filling \"Let It Shine.\" Special mention should be given to Empress Bev, whose backing vocals add so much to the unique sound of this album and help it stand out from the crowd. Things were very different back in 2012 when we compiled and released the eponymous \"Cool Runnings\" on CD only. The vinyl revival is a belated opportunity to give the band their first long playing record to complement that earlier CD release. Together for a dozen years, Cool Runnings were one of Bristol's longest lasting bands gigging throughout the 1980s, though their failure to gig beyond the West Country meant they were also one of the City's best kept musical secrets. Originally formed in Weston-Super-Mare by Keyboardist Mark Tuck and Guitarist George Condover, they immediately relocated to Bristol and recruited various local musicians including an experienced and talented singer, Winston Minott. Although \"Robin Hoods of The Ghetto\" was their solitary release, the band regularly recorded material throughout their career and fortunately thanks to the foresight of George and Mark in holding onto various master tapes, Bristol Archive Records were able to release the band's self-titled debut album \"Cool Runnings\" in 2012. For this vinyl release we've selected eight tracks recorded between 1983 and 1985 at various local studios, and a solitary live track to give an idea of why the band were so popular in person. Although their music leans towards the more mellow end of the market, Lovers Rock, music ideally suited to Winston's soulful voice, the band were more than capable of writing good roots tunes including the excellent \"We Must Go Home\", \"Children of Zion\" and \"Robin Hoods of The Ghetto\". Winston Minott had spent many years touring all over Europe with soul band The Invaders and many songs showcase his vocal talent, but a particular highlight has to be \"Playhouse\" an alternative recording of which can be found on \"The Bristol Reggae Explosion Volume 3\". Poorly pressed, in very small numbers and with limited distribution, the album didn't sell well and barely made an impact on its release. However, whatever its problems the music itself was first class and over the last three decades, has acquired numerous fans and an ever growing reputation as a classic of the British reggae genre. Musically this is one of the strongest UK albums there is, with not a single weak track and many stand outs. Six of the ten songs are roots, varying between a classic roots sound based on a 1970s Jamaican blue print on 'Essence of Redemption', 'Nuclear Disaster', 'Soul Searching' and 'Pestilence and Bombing' to a more contemporary UK feel on 'Right Time Coming,' whilst 'Get Up And Go' incorporates a funk feel into the mix. Our first act new to the series are Natural Mystique with their 1982 single 'Generals' whilst tracks 3, 4 and 5 round off the missing A and B sides from some of the most popular artists we included last time with Iganda's 'Mark Of Slavery', Carnastoan's 'Sweet Melody' and yet another Generals, this one from Musical Youth featuring the same line up that caused so much surprise and positive feedback with their inclusion on Volume One. 'Africans' from Bass Dance featuring a second appearance from former Steel Pulse guitarist \/ vocalist Basil Gabbidon, is the first of four previously unreleased tracks. The other three that have managed to have been tracked down on long forgotten tapes, are Leicester's Groundation with 'Rebel' recorded a few years before 'Fa Ward' which we included last time, 'Cannot Take It Away'; another lost gem from Handsworth's Mystic Foundation and 'Equalisation' another lost slice of early eighties roots from Wolverhampton's Capital Letters. The late Linton Haughton is another new name with his scarce Shield label 12\" cut 'Hustling Man'. Also making their first appearances, are Afrikan Star with \"Run And Hide\" originally issued in 1980 on Black Vinyl Records and from the Crucial Music stable, Sledge Hammer with 'Ruled By The Stone' released as a 7\" single on the Crucial Music Inc. label. The remaining three tracks are provided by label favourites and key players in the Birmingham scene, Black Symbol, Sceptre and Eclipse and showcase songs from the individual albums we've previously released by each band. This album is British roots reggae at its finest, steering its own course and not looking over its shoulder at what was happening in Jamaica. Whilst the low budget home studio approach looks to the future and the early drum machine beats place it firmly in 1982 the lyrics are classic roots reggae: Referencing slavery and making clear those responsible are the ones who will feel it with punishment in the afterlife. The real icing on the cake is that this is that rarest of offerings a female roots vocal ably handled by future Restriction vocalist Sis Jendayi. A cry for both work and a better future where the children will be given a chance to have jobs and security; it ably reflects the desperation and despair that so many felt at that time. Almost as much a part of the 1981 political landscape was The Cold War and fear of nuclear Armageddon. \u003ci\u003eGenerals\u003c\/i\u003e touches on its anti-war call for pacifism, naming and shaming the officers rather than the ordinary soldiers who ultimately pay the price for wars. Both sides have an unmistakeably British roots reggae sound, a sound that for many years was underappreciated by both critics and fans alike who saw anything non Jamaican as second class.
