Ryley Walker is the reincarnation of the true American guitar player. That's as much a testament to his roving, rambling ways, or the fact that his Guild D-35 guitar has endured a few stints in the pawnshop. Swap out rural juke joints for rotted DIY spaces and the archetype is solidly intact. His personal life might be tumultuous and his residential status in question, but his bedrock is disciplined daily rehearsal and an inexhaustible wellspring of songcraft. The board was barely reset from the 'All Kinds of You' sessions before Ryley was corralling his by-then-rejiggered band back into Minbal studios in Chicago to solidify a totally new direction in his creative vision. 'Primrose Green' couldn't be restrained. It begins near where 'All Kinds of You' leaves off but quickly pushes far afield. The title sounds pastoral and quaint, but the titular green has dark hallucinogenic qualities, as does much of the LP. I wanted to make something deep-fried and more me-sounding. I didn’t want to be jammy acoustic guy anymore. I just wanted to make something weird and far-out that came from the heart finally. I was always trying to make something like this I guess, trying to catch up with my imagination. And I think I succeeded in that way — it’s got some weird instrumentation on there, and some surreal far-out words. The last record was cool but I was still figuring out what I was good at. But I’m fucking 28 years old, I’ve got to figure out a sound, figure out something that I enjoy doing. So this record is a little bit more grown up. Ol’Ryley’s just workin’ on bein’ a better Ryley. I think more than anything the thing to take away from this record is that I appreciate what improv and jamming and that outlook on music has done for me, but I wanted rigid structure for these songs. I don’t want to expand upon them live. There’s a looseness to some of the songs I guess, but I didn’t want to rely on just hanging out on one note. It’s so straight-forward that I can see a lot of people really not liking it to be honest. But I’m so happy, I’m happy that it’s completely different and unexpected."

LP - With Download.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/d9154d72-3267-4dff-937b-c768029de929_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727582401
golden-sings-that-have-been-sung
Golden Sings That Have Been Sung

The preceding years have been extraordinary for Ryley Walker. In March, his second album, Primrose Green, emerged to critical hosannas from the likes of NPR, Village Voice, Uncut, and Mojo - in the process, earning admiration of musicians who had chalked up no shortage of turntable miles in Walker's life. Robert Plant declared himself a fan - as did double-bass legend Danny Thompson, with whom Ryley would later embark on a British tour. A sprawling tour of the USA around Primrose Green presented a perfect chance to workshop ideas for what would eventually become his third studio album, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung. On the album, The Roundabout represents a symbolic return to Chicago, while other songs are directly wedded to Ryley's actual return there. Perhaps more than any other song on the record, the somnambulant sun-dappled intimacies of opening track The Halfwit In Me most audibly bear the imprint of Ryley's improvisational sessions with Wilco multi-instrumentalist, Chicagoan and producer Leroy Bach, while Funny Thing She Said is an unflinching study of separation set to a shimmeringly supple ensemble performance. Soft, slo-mo explosions of melody intermittently burst through the distant thunder of the verses on A Choir Apart. Intriguing, surreal images are meted out by I Will Ask You Twice, like a malfunctioning slide projector; and, perhaps best of all, the stunning finale, Age Old Tale, which spiders out from an Alice Coltrane-inspired reverie into a sustained rapture that very few artists have managed to achieve.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/55I8CvHH1U4

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/cc8ac8d8-063a-4d51-8ab4-d059d794c8ff_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727704210
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/collections/test_51a2ec83_thumbnail_4096_7037a600-f3cc-4732-b361-c495c26ce646.jpg?v=1726279588
