The album is entitled Votive, functioning as an exploration of memory and how, "over time, recollections of words and meanings become hazy and decayed, in turn taking on new forms and purposes

Votive comes from a sense of an offering in 'devotion to a memory'. The offering that Votive makes is an overt one, where very little is held back. In this spirit, the album wears emotion on its sleeve: the grooves, the chords, the melodies are big and immediate, especially at the front end of the album. As it progresses and over the second half it draws in on itself, becoming more reflexive but no less sentimental, and a poignant melody or atmosphere is never far at hand.

Mangled vocals appear and then recede throughout the proceedings. You’d be mistaken, however, if you thought this provides immediate humanity: the processing and the unintelligible words keep the warmth at arms’ length, as if dealing with ghosts. According to SHALT himself, “words are removed from their original context, given different meaning by recasting the voice into new elements, rather than relying on the original language itself”. Indeed, often, a voice can only barely be made out as such, morphed beyond recognition into a lead synth or an alien texture.

Overall, Votive is more cinematic and expansive than any of SHALT’s previous releases, as if the familiar traits and gestures (big square-wave basslines, 3-D IMAX leads) were given free rein and were finally allowed to stretch out to their full potential, freed from the constraints of the dancefloor.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/cover.ki-1_ba9b9f50-8816-4b7f-948f-283a2342deb6.jpg?v=1777308162
