It is also the last EP from his current studio before it is dismantled and moved to Amsterdam sometime this summer.

From start to finish, this new EP showcases Hamill's ability to craft emotionally evocative melodies and genuinely absorbing soundtracks. Opener 'Jet Free' is awash with filtered synths that are sugary sweet and underpinned by funky guitar riffs and laissez-faire grooves. The wonderful 'Cryfaze' has rueful pads spiralling around sleek drums that bounce along next to supple neon arps, while 'Tiraquon’s Final Quest' is a bubbling and elastic rhythm run through with soft acid squelches and pixelated pads full of cosmic charm. '1 4 U' rides on heavier drums but is no less joyous thanks to the crystalline melodies and dreamy vocals that swell the heart. Vinyl exclusive 'Acid Funk Sequel' is another playful moon safari with buoyant bass patterns and snappy drum funk under ever-evolving melodic refrains and 'Beyond2' closes down with forlorn, introspective melodies that ripple over heavy-hearted chords.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/a2871496932_16_1bc4372b_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727061242
acid-sampler-15
Acid Sampler 1.5

The follow-up to the first Acid Sampler is now in the hands of a single artist. Space Dimension Controller does Running Back the honour to leave his fingerprints on the (usually) silver box – and it’s a match made in heaven. The Irish man’s music is mostly a nod to the subtle and more delicate ramifications of electronic music. His Acid Sampler is no exception. Most of the EP presents itself as an ode to the brain dance vibe of acid house rooted music. While leaving out the harder and faster styles of the genre, SDC manages to pour his heart and soul as a producer into these four charming tracks.

Kosmische Conga works as the leader of the pack and pirouettes with memorable hooks, synthesizer swells and descant acid lines. Echopet introverts the whole concept, while Minehead peaks with it. Named after the seaside town that harbored the Bloc Weekend festival, its a warp-free romantic reflex of the brain dance vibe – or a heartfelt love song for circuits. Carinacid completes the quartet with a chugging and hugging mid tempo beat that could have gone on forever. Needless to say that it pushes all the right buttons. Warm and playful, but forcing and with fresh jive, Neuclidea and its siblings revolve around classic SDC values. Nevertheless, the Irish melodist is also moving on to new pastures. Hardware sequencing, vintage digital synthesizers via analogue processing spawn a sound that pirouettes as much around the lost cyber-hippie poetry of Border Community as it’s the effigy of fast balearic euphoria – if Ibiza would have been a party scene in Gattaca. Completing this treasure chest is a remix by Hodge for the pragmatic minded out there. Using some heavy drums of the west, his version of Neuclidea extracts the trance-like elements of the original and turns it into a floor-polishing brush. Washed in reverb and draped in hiss, the album draws influence from the old VHS tapes handed down to Space Dimension Controller from his older brother and cousins, as well as artists like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno and William Basinski. The album is also steeped in audio and visual references from 80's and 90's sci-fi films and animations; from The Guyver, Short Circuit, The Gobots, and Ghostbusters through to The Fifth Element, Escape from New York and Power Rangers.

The recording process involved Space Dimension Controller (real name Jack Hamill) using a batch of unopened pyral cassette tapes from the 70's, some of which were so old they had degraded. The use of these tapes creates a rough prettiness and incessant buzz beneath the stuttering beats and glitch-heavy techno effects. On tracks like 'The Bad People' and 'West G Cafetaria' Hamill, like the best producers of his ilk, has made something just short of pop music without compromising the album's essential strange qualities.

The title refers to Hamill's memories of living with his grandparents when he was younger; the orange comes from the 80s style tiling in their kitchen, and the melamine from the snake enclosures his grandfather helped build for him.

On 'Orange Melamine' Hamill skilfully displays his early ability to make electronic tracks there are intricate and futuristic but also imbued with personality. Original without being difficult, enjoyable while being distinctive; that 'Orange Melamine' triumphs without compromise is testament to a distinctively creative artist.LP - Deluxe Gatefold double LP pressed on heavyweight 180 Gram black vinyl.
