Central to the work is the exploratory interlocution of synths and hardware in crafting a barrage of machined rhythm and terse eruptions of noise.

Urbanfailure transmits mutating patterns and sequences from his electronics that are as nimble as they are brutal. Quick turns, jump scares and slights of hand run rampant amidst the crunchy drum programming and granular modulations. Radical Rest is a milestone album for urbanfailure, as these live skills have been honed within the controlled environment of the studio.

Cybernetic tendrils of raw electricity erupt and collapse along these unstable spines of rhythm. The plastic morphology of Radical Rest hinges upon urbanfailure’s labyrinthine approach to rhythm. The album’s steady pulse leaps through innovative tangents and detours that are intentionally spare on melody and devoid of anthemic hooks. “Spread Exploded” scatters an intricate dispersion of mechanoid samples before coalescing into a muscular techno groove, complete with throbbed basslines.

The diptych of “Primitive Past” and “Dystopian Future” boils with a jackbooted, high-octane hard house excess and industrial bruitism. Urbanfailure’s origins date back to the time after the collapse of the Iron Curtain and the rush towards a globalized free market. With the opportunities for cultural exchange and economic prosperity made manifest, Slovak (like other post-Soviet countries) was open to a Pandora’s Box of influences. Punk. Techno. Metal. Noise. All of these inspired the DIY underground, but at the same time, many of the agents and operatives in the Slovak music community were quick to take inspiration from the gritty immediacy of social turmoil and upheaval.

Urbanfailure’s process of construction and destruction of sound becomes a mirror to the changing Slovak society that he has witnessed for the two decades. Bold in execution and dynamic in content Radical Rest is a vibrant synthesis of error, emptiness, and raw energy, with parallels emergent in Chu Ishikawa’s Testuo, The Iron Man soundtracks, the Lagowski productions for GPR, and the final fruits from Pan Sonic.

Dead Janitor is the alter-ego for Slovak electronic technician Braňo Findrik. Over the past decade, he has steadily produced a series of digital releases leading to his debut Medusa LP for Urbsounds. With an arsenal of pixelated breakbeats and stuttering samples, Dead Janitor presents an adventurous form of polymetric electronica, echoing the complex IDM explorations of the pioneering work of Aphex Twin and Autechre. Medusa is an apt title for the album that hybridizes digital and analogue technologies into a labyrinthine architecture of sound that prioritizes rhythm over melody.

The title was inspired by the beloved camp of Clash Of The Titans but also alludes to the hostility that have become normalized in contemporary politics and culture. Here, Dead Janitor turns samples upside down, subjects the internal clocks to breakneck multiplication and division, atomsmashes electronic sound into it granular parts, and otherwise sets up rhythm to be in conflict with itself.

Tracks such as “Mandatory” that cycle through its 8-bit density of Gameboy bleeps and the title track with its aggressive industrial clamor provide a number of complicated listening experiences that reveal hidden patterns and rhythmic undercurrents over repeated listens. With its emphasis on displacement and dislocation, Medusa makes for a thrilling if idiosyncratic album in the lineage of Evol, Mark Fell, Russell Haswell, and late-period Autechre. Credits All tracks composed, performed and produced by Dead Janitor Mixed by Dead Janitor Mastered by Eric Van Wonterghem at Prodam in Berlin Artwork by Dead Janitor

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/2000x2000bb_9a8dd9d7-58ff-42b8-a937-e8a4dfd5357f.jpg?v=1754315781
right-diadgonal
Right Diadgonal

Next up on Urbsounds is a varied and robust collection of electronic music from Buenos Aires-based artist Mtheorem. Right Diagonal kicks off with the title track which presents a potent wall of sound that undulates across a pensive current. The world has changed a lot since the beginning of the millennium. However, Urbsounds still go for noisy and dirty experimental electronics, from which you can feel the spirit of abandoned industrial spaces and punk squats. They commemorate their 20th anniversary with ten tracks created especially for the Unpolished fidelity compilation. It’s an abstract, raw, aggressive statement, attempting to tame their energy on record. It’s music that takes no prisoners. Urbsounds have never forgotten their punk past, carrying this as the main line throughout their twenty years.

The DIY approach to making and releasing music and organizing parties remained. Synths and tone generators replaced punk guitars. It is a spontaneous, immediate piece built on interaction with hardware. Capturing the moment of jamming on sound modules, effects, and other boxes is more important than composition and studio procedures. It’s music that will never be popular. It’s music for the faithful, for the community. Urbsounds have been maintaining it for twenty years, but they are open to new people – both listeners and creators. Urbsounds also released foreign musicians, but on LP Unpolished Fidelity, you will find their hardcore, only Slovak music.

Tracks are by the founders of the collective – Urbanfailure and RBNX. Ex-Jamka Daniel Kordík and Monika Šubrtová are today respected soloists known internationally. Here we find samples of their current sound, i.e., modular worlds and dystopian, slow techno. It’s not just noise here. On Unpolished Fidelity, you can hear IDM (NDS), hypnotic techno (Makkatu), deep psychedelic dives (Vŕtačky po desáté hodine), industrial (Dead Janitor), and tekno (Maraki). Music never sounds the same, and you can always find something new in it. It’s music that must be listened to loud, on noisy equipment. Adam Matej, a generation younger creator of electronic music performing as DJ GÄP, took care of the Unpolished Fidelity master.

Boris Vitázek, a renowned new media artist, designed the cover art and design.

TRACKLIST :
1.
