floodlight-exchange
Floodlight Exchange

After more than three decades of music making, Richard Talbot still doesn't think of it as work - He makes sounds because he needs to - A few hours a day - A way of getting outside himself - Somewhere else to go.

Floodlight Exchange is the latest album from Prospector Sound, Talbot's solo project and the work of a musician who has spent much of his life exploring atmosphere, space and sound. Best known as a founding member of Manchester's Marconi Union, Talbot has always approached music through sound itself - drawn to the qualities of frequencies, textures and the spaces they can create.

Talbot is constantly making music, with no particular intention of sharing it. It is a therapeutic exercise rather than a professional pursuit. Floodlight Exchange came about almost by accident. He began collecting his favourite tracks into a playlist and, listening to them together, noticed that certain pieces seemed to hang together as a cohesive body of work. By discarding what didn't fit, he gradually stripped the playlist back until the shape of an album emerged. That album became Floodlight Exchange.

The album is entirely beatless. Instead, it moves through shifting layers of synthesised sound, and processed textures, with a distinctly organic quality. Talbot has long been attracted to the sounds of nature, and here electronic tones are allowed to behave with the irregularity and subtle movement of the natural world.

The opening Early Hours stretches beyond ten minutes. Two synth parts gradually intertwine, creating subtle changes in tone and harmony. Guitar from former band mate, Marconi Union's Jamie Crossley adds another layer to the piece, grounding its drifting, spectral quality.

Across Floodlight Exchange, sounds seem to fold over one another, revealing new details as they interact. There is a sense of things happening just beyond the surface. The track titles, with their nods towards the spy fiction of writers such as John le Carre, reflect something of this atmosphere - watchful, mysterious and pensive.

There is darkness throughout, but also light. Small flashes that emerge from somewhere inside it. The result is expansive, cinematic and otherworldly, with a feeling of drifting memories and a space suspended somewhere between time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/prospector-sound-floodlight-exchange.jpg?v=1793801042
