With the likes of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart also active in the area, \u003cstrong\u003eFrankhauser\u003c\/strong\u003e hooked up with 14-year-old guitarist Jeff Cotton to form \u003cem\u003eMerrell And The Exiles\u003c\/em\u003e, a teen pop outfit who had a couple of local hits.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1967 \u003cstrong\u003eMerrell\u003c\/strong\u003e put together \u003cem\u003eFapardokly\u003c\/em\u003e, whose limited edition LP is now one of the rarest US psychedelic albums. \u003cem\u003eFapardokly\u003c\/em\u003e mutated into \u003cem\u003eHMS Bounty\u003c\/em\u003e, signed by UNI Records president Russ Regan. An \u003cem\u003eHMS Bounty\u003c\/em\u003e album was headed by \"Things (Goin' Round In My Mind)\", an insidious slice of bubblegum that fell just short of becoming a hit single.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eHMS Bounty\u003c\/em\u003e then gave way to \u003cem\u003eMu\u003c\/em\u003e, a partial reformation of \u003cem\u003eThe Exiles\u003c\/em\u003e that reunited \u003cstrong\u003eMerrell\u003c\/strong\u003e with Jeff Cotton, who meanwhile had been a key member of Captain Beefheart's band during the 'Trout Mask Replica' days.
