But in the shadows lurked another prime purveyor of northern darkness. Formed by Marius Vold \u0026amp; Steinar Sverd Johnsen in 1989, \u003cem\u003eMortem\u003c\/em\u003e was one of the first black metal bands to crawl out of the woodwork in Norway, releasing the highly coveted \u0026amp; brutal \u003cem\u003eSlow Death\u003c\/em\u003e demo, with Euronymous \u0026amp; Dead of Mayhem acting as producer \u0026amp; cover artist respectively.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the release of \u003cem\u003eSlow Death\u003c\/em\u003e, the band was laid to rest with members going on to form \u0026amp; feature in acclaimed titans such as \u003cem\u003eArcturus\u003c\/em\u003e \u0026amp; \u003cem\u003eThorns\u003c\/em\u003e, both of which would become mainstays in the black metal scene \u0026amp; beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn a moment of nostalgia \u0026amp; a desire for something more brutal beyond the current vessel of \u003cem\u003eArcturus\u003c\/em\u003e, the corpse of \u003cem\u003eMortem\u003c\/em\u003e was revived, \u0026amp; the unholy duo of Marius \u0026amp; Steinar joined forces once more.
