The two classifications were not mutually exclusive; Baker's vocal numbers would also feature his trumpet playing, as well as fine instrumental support from West Coast cool jazzers. For those who prefer the vocal side of the Baker canon, this is an excellent compilation of his best vintage material in that mode.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/3d3aff44-3f05-415b-a5ed-6ceaaba1e9dc_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726659961
days-and-nights-of-love-and-war
Days and Nights Of Love and War

the vague truth: capital live by the seaside. they consist of nick webb (vocals), joel roberts (keyboards / vocals), james moir (bass), mike dawson (guitar) and daniel thorpe (drums). together they make broodingly sensitive mini-epics painstakingly forged from the best bits of the early '80s, the coolest parts of the early '00s and some spare melodic shrapnel found lying around in the corner of the studio. can they fixx it? yes they can. 'days and nights of love and war' is a snapshot of a new band merrily finding their musical feet, pure and simple. recorded pretty much by capital themselves at home in eastbourne on a budget of three pence and a bag of crisps this six-track introductory shortplayer doesn't actually include terrific debut single 'bright lights' (released on label fandango in august 2008), nor fearsomely fine live finale 'someone', nor indeed future ace single-in-waiting 'trespassing'. what it does include however is a couple of heroic indiesynthrock anthems in the form of lead-off single 'ruin' and 'public square', and a brace of weeping nuggets in 'hey there' and 'earphones' (itself some kind of distant cousin of 'tiny children' by teardrop explodes). chuck in the sleek disco ball-spinning 'broken glass' and the massive pop enigma of 'easier to leave' and you have yourself one smart wee shortplaying release. better still 'days and nights of love and war' is released in the midst of a whirlwind of activity in the panda camp, with the debut album from hatcham social and return trips to the uk from the spinto band and the walkmen already firmly on the agenda for fierce panda's fifteenth birthday celebrations in 2009. capital themselves started the new year in the bestest way possible with a prime slot at the pandamonium event and they follow up recent support slots with iliketrains, the bookhouse boys and airborne toxic event.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/fb862874-d2f3-40f0-99b9-ea90f3ac8ace_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727381023
