Featuring cover tracks of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, A Flock of Seagulls, Grauzone, Harald Grosskopf, Günter Schickert and David Bowies. New York-based Rafael Anton Irisarri was responsible for mastering of the record. As part of the series with graphic covers, this die-cut artwork was also created by Mexican designer Daniel Castrejon. The one time only vinyl pressing, limited to 350 copies, comes in a beautifully designed die-cut cover and coloured vinyl. The Osnabrück duo Sankt Otten, founded in 1999, have been releasing on Denovali since 2009. Sankt Otten came up with the master plan to first free the spirit of 50 years of German electronic music trapped in the antiquated keyboards and oscillator housings, then to dismantle it, turn it inside out and reinterpret it. Echoes of music from Düsseldorf are joined by sounds familiar from the Weserbergland, or mystical, sublime arcs of sound and, of course, the sequences typical of the Berlin School - whether side by side or interwoven. In a departure from the usual way of working, the majority of the tracks were created in the studio and in part from improvisations, which makes “Tote Winkel “ the most organic material we have heard from Sankt Otten to date. The dusty, haunted jazz of 'M.=addiction' and 'Vertigo II' is still visible, but joined by Stolze's shimmering string tones, giving the already rich sound a further layer of depth. The title \u003cem\u003ePoems from a rooftop\u003c\/em\u003e comes from Iran's 'green revolution', where people were so afraid to go out on the street that they emerged on their own rooftops to protest the stifling regime. This sentiment carries into the conflict and shrouded mystery in each song, from the rhythmic, emotive bar-room crawl of 'The Conversation' to the phenomenal 'Rattle', led by vocalist Mariechen Danz. It seems as if \u003cem\u003ePoems from a rooftop\u003c\/em\u003e catches a point in the band's career where they appear perfectly at ease with their sound, and able to distil the jazz, subtle electronics and haunting ambience of their previous records into one deftly coherent whole.
