With the help of longtime collaborator Dave Morgan alongside the input of Gareth Matthews, Ruth Tidmarsh and Cos Chapman, abstract patterns of dishevelled sound rub alongside occasional percussion, disembodied plasma guitar strums and even what seems like an oboe groaning in a murky corner. Similar to its distant cousin of Vibing…, everything adds up to a whole that’s demanding yet completely rewarding as every listen prises open the dark scab of contemporary malaise to reveal something fresh. The front cover’s homage to an incredible album by a pioneering electronic group we are not going to name should in itself point to the unpredictable nature of the music here. If you are savvy enough to get that reference, then you’re on the right path to understanding where Direct Action resides. Where Reverse Image assume stealth as a crackle and hum guiding force, Fallen Sun are more akin to the full-on blazing attack that displays just enough restraint and occasional rhythmic prowess to avoid reaching a Merzbow-type meltdown. Despite appearances, however, Beyond the Flat Earth brings together ten pieces more interested in the sonic arrangements than anything overtly primal. How Gary manages to keep pulling new ideas out of the proverbial hat at this rate is anybody's guess, but the latest album, For the Lives Once Lived illustrates very clearly that the wellspring he draws from has far from dried up. If you have been paying attention to the albums that have been released by Fourth Dimension Records during recent years, you should understand that his solo music has retained the molten intensity it has always been propelled by since Kleistwahr was founded in the early 1980s. While the work occasionally seems as though it draws from the same dusty religious setting as some of Messiaen's wonderful organ compositions, there's still an all-encompassing blanket of ravaged psychedelia firmly laced with blood-flecked barbs to help counter this. When Kleistwahr's music seems poised to elevate the atmospheric gestures towards the sublime and elegiac, there's always a gaping maw lined with razor-edged teeth lurking nearby to help keep all those lofty hopes and expectations from getting above themselves. For the Lives Once Lived may also surprise many with its opening song, 'Rotten Boroughs', which both stands out from the rest of the album yet makes sense as part of it. You'll see what we mean when you get to it. Otherwise, this is another fantastic album from the unstoppable force that is Gary Mundy's Kleistwahr. Long may it continue. This compendium gathers all 13 issues in their entirety, as well as the other titles and additional ephemera, alongside insightful introductions to each of them, an interview with Alan Rider, a foreword by Matthew Worley, blurb by Nicholas Bullen (himself inspired by AiR enough to start his own ‘zine), and several other bonuses. \u003cbr\u003eCollected in an A4 book similar in size to the Grim Humour one also published by Fourth Dimension, this makes for a perfect return trip to a time long gone still of interest to either those informed by it or those who wish to navigate their way to why it was so unique in the first place. Besides being wholly possessed of its own sound, however, Kleistwahr is distinguishable for its always moving forward and developing ideas only hinted at on the preceding album.Where the Word is Never is no exception. The six cuts see less of the organ and more in the way of simplistic rhythm pulses, Gary’s vocals and even, on a couple of cuts at least, something that might be considered akin to a song structure if one greets The Dead C more or less the same way and has had enough decent wine. Like recent albums, however, Where the Word is Never mostly delivers like it has been created through a rich blend of torment, lament and general despair before it frantically reaches for that small and beautiful white dot in the distance where all such thoughts can be cast asunder. Similar to its distant cousin of Vibing…, everything adds up to a whole that’s demanding yet completely rewarding as every listen prises open the dark scab of contemporary malaise to reveal something fresh. As with the debut, the sonics are jagged and abrasive as they collide into each other or assume meta-rhythmic forms which flutter violently into torrents of searing lava that are utterly unforgiving as they burn into the very being of the listener. Formed from a pedal noise set-up with the exception of one track which was created with Eurorack, the seven pieces successfully apply new meaning to a genre that’s already gone a long way since the likes of Incapacitants, Merzbow and Masonna helped render it as one to be considered seriously. While it is true that such music (and, please, let’s consider it thus) first mapped itself via the likes of Whitehouse, Non, Ramleh, SPK, Consumer Electronics and so on, or even arguably Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music album, its reach has traversed far and wide over the decades since, both globally and with respect to an understanding of composition from more academic masters such as Xenakis.To that end, Parallel Disalignment presents the perfect title to an album grand in its quest to reach beyond something it might be seen as being part of. Besides the dynamic interplay at work throughout it, often cut with an edge which at first appears as hostile as it is impenetrable, there’s something almost uncontrollably joyous to behold. This is evident on the collaborative piece, ‘Session 46’, which witnesses the deployment of birdsong by Peter Wullen to help counter the overtly incendiary nature of the proceedings with sounds more organic or celebratory.To end everything, there’s a lengthy track taken from a live appearance at the Negative Frequencies show in Malaysia whereby everything is so powerful you can picture yourself being washed over in this assault of merciless cadences right there in the venue itself.
