After four albums with \u003cstrong\u003eMontrose\u003c\/strong\u003e between 1973 and 1977, plus a solo album in 1978, \u003cstrong\u003eRonnie\u003c\/strong\u003e formed \u003cstrong\u003eGamma\u003c\/strong\u003e with \u003cstrong\u003eDavey Pattison\u003c\/strong\u003e in 1979.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSwitching from Warner Bros to Elektra records, \u003cstrong\u003eGamma\u003c\/strong\u003e’s first album, \u003cem\u003eGamma 1\u003c\/em\u003e (CD1) was released in July 1979, and featured \u003cstrong\u003eDavey Pattison\u003c\/strong\u003e on vocals, former \u003cstrong\u003eMontrose\u003c\/strong\u003e members \u003cstrong\u003eJim Alcivar\u003c\/strong\u003e on keyboards, and \u003cstrong\u003eAlan Fitzgerald\u003c\/strong\u003e on bass guitar, with \u003cstrong\u003eSkip Gillette\u003c\/strong\u003e on drums and \u003cstrong\u003eRonnie\u003c\/strong\u003e on lead guitar. Building on the hard rock of \u003cstrong\u003eMontrose\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eGamma\u003c\/strong\u003e had a more progressive feel, reflecting the growing and popular use of keyboards towards the end of the decade. Produced by \u003cstrong\u003eKen Scott\u003c\/strong\u003e (David Bowie, Elton John, Supertramp), \u003cem\u003eGamma 1\u003c\/em\u003e features the hit single ‘\u003cem\u003eI’m Alive\u003c\/em\u003e’, and a cover of The Hollies’ song – A Mono Single Edit is included as a bonus track.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSecond album \u003cem\u003eGamma 2\u003c\/em\u003e (CD2) followed in August 1980. Now featuring \u003cstrong\u003eGlenn Letsch\u003c\/strong\u003e on bass guitar and \u003cstrong\u003eMontrose\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cstrong\u003eDenny Carmassi\u003c\/strong\u003e (Whitesnake, Heart) on drums, the album features a faithful cover of Thunderclap Newman’s ‘\u003cem\u003eSomething In The Air\u003c\/em\u003e’. Co-produced by \u003cstrong\u003eGary Lyons\u003c\/strong\u003e with \u003cstrong\u003eRonnie\u003c\/strong\u003e, tracks such as ‘\u003cem\u003eMean Streak\u003c\/em\u003e’ and ‘\u003cem\u003eCat On A Leash\u003c\/em\u003e’ gave the album a heavier sound. ‘\u003cem\u003eSomething In The Air\u003c\/em\u003e’ (Mono Single Edit), ‘\u003cem\u003eVoyager\u003c\/em\u003e’ (Single Edit) and ‘\u003cem\u003eVoyager\u003c\/em\u003e’ (Mono Single Edit) are featured as bonus tracks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFans would have to wait until February 1982 for \u003cstrong\u003eGamma\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cem\u003eGamma 3\u003c\/em\u003e (CD3). Joined by \u003cstrong\u003eMitchell Froom\u003c\/strong\u003e (Crowded House, Sheryl Crow) on keyboards, \u003cstrong\u003eGamma\u003c\/strong\u003e’s third and last record for Elektra certainly reflects the new wave sounds prevalent in the Stateside charts of the early 1980s, while still retaining a hard rock edge.
