In this world, fun and indulgence come at a price; a shadow of consequence is embodied in the form of a sinister blue faced scarecrow. He is a boogeyman of sorts, akin to the beasts scaring children into good-behaviour in bed time stories, but now finding his form in adulthood. The Scarecrow reminds us that everything comes at a price, and punishes those that have too much fun. He is the embodied voice of guilt after you choose one more drink, one more episode. He lays dormant, silently watching until it’s time to strike. Can we ever really escape this lurking figure? In the times we have succeeded, how long does it last? ‘Frolic’ follows a narrative that begins with indulgence and moves through to consequence; starting with euphoric melodies and big room drops ('Frolic', 'Didn’t Need U Anyway') and ending in moments of unravelling reflection ('Scrolling', 'The Hypocrite'). The Scarecrow reveals himself for the first time during the breakdown of the EP’s centrepiece ‘Somersault’; a theatrical club epic in which the scarecrow cackles the lines “You plead a pregnant passage yet frolic and frot without consequence!?” summarising the spirit of the EP succinctly. The concept of indulgence has fuelled the composition of ‘Frolic’ as a whole, where Mun Sing would lean into singalong melodies and satisfying drops using a more inclusive musical language in favour of the grief-inspired awkwardness of last years debut album ‘Inflatable Gravestone’ (Planet Mu). ‘Frolic’ is inspired by big stadium pop concerts for its large-scale storytelling and pantomime-esque audience participation. After years of navigating loss and spirituality, Mun Sing found the natural next step to be writing music which explores the dialogue of joy and escapism. This will be Mun Sing’s first record on his own Illegal Data label which has released albums and compilations featuring the likes of Sarahsson, Swan Meat, AYA, LCY and Ship Sket to name a few. On his debut LP ‘Inflatable Gravestone’ (Planet Mu, 2023), Mun Sing explored ideas around grief and addiction after the sudden loss of his father. The album received notable critical acclaim across the board including being named as one of Resident Advisor’s best albums of 2023. He has since been recruited by the likes of Acne Studios to compose music for a number of their runways and projects, most recently the Women’s SS25 collection and the first ever Acne Studios fragrance. He’s produced tracks for the likes of BABii, Gaika and Iceboy Violet and was personally invited by Björk to perform alongside her at special events in Reykjavik and NYC in 2024. He has toured extensively around the world and has shows across Asia, Australia and Europe coming up. In his forthcoming shows, Mun Sing will debut a live performance where we see him play the character of the blue faced scarecrow in an epic expression of madness and exhilaration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Frolic_-_EP_16cf7f28_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1738909194
aninstar
Aninstar

Silver Waves is the longstanding project of Dylan Mallett. A producer based in Bristol, his practice encompasses aspects of electroacoustic composition, audio engineering and improvisation. Amongst releases on Berlin's Portals Editions (Maria W Horn, Yair Elazar Glotman), Silver Waves has soundtracked independent video games and contributed to contemporary art pieces (Klein's ‘Lifetime' for Serpentine Galleries), as well as composing for multi-channel surround sound performance. Following technical credits on releases from AD93, Drowned By Locals and two Acne Studios collections, European shows with Liturgy, aya and Moor Mother and extensive collaborations with free improv vocalist Dali de Saint Paul, Silver Waves presents debut album ‘Aninstar’ via Mun Sing & NE$$’s label Illegal Data. Aninstar embodies a quest for rebirth via transitory states. Taking root during a four-month stint in Llandudno, it tells tales of a stray dog as it journeys through an underworld, conjures viking funeral sea-scapes from shoreline voice notes and liminal crossroads punctuated by whispered meditations. Forming sonic allegories for the stories in Dylan’s surroundings, its six tracks emanate from coastal field recordings, pneumatic drill foley, chopped and screwed vocal takes and gnarled string instruments - landing somewhere between industrial shoegaze, sound collage and new age folklore. In late 2024, the debut Silver Waves Trio performance was commissioned by Batu's En Masse Festival, manifesting a live premiere of Aninstar in the tunnels of Bristol's Loco Klub featuring double bassist Jo Kelly and avant-percussionist Dan Johnson, with lighting design by rxx_tx.
