As a gospel-trained child, he knew how to handle the lyrics and deftly adapt his vocal tones, like a genuine storyteller. With James Harman, we used to go to those roadside diners, with ketchup-stained tablecloths, where you had to ask for more napkins ('Extra napkins') because life was like a game of dice, often loaded ('Crapshoot').\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e James Harman's Belgian popularity is reflected again in this live recording tracked at the Spring Blues Festival in Ecaussinnes, 2003. Another artist who completely mixes up Southern Soul and Blues is Lonnie Shields, who at one time was on the verge of a major breakthrough. Bill Flick is featured with two songs. Somewhere along the line Bill Flick became Willie Edwards. Confusing as hell. UK and European reissue record companies were researching the vaults of US Blues and R\u0026amp;B record labels from the pre-war era and the 1940s, '50s, '60s and '70s - with new album releases appearing almost weekly.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e  Long forgotten and obscure blues artists were rediscovered (such as Dallas bluesman Zuzu Bollin, Baton Rouge's Clarence Edwards and Chicago's Lucky Lopez Evans). Importantly, new names were also emerging on the US blues scene - many of them featured on this JSP compilation from the era. At Blues \u0026amp; Rhythm we were always eager to support new blues talent through features, interviews and reviews in the magazine - and help them to play the UK.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e   \u003cstrong\u003eTHE JSP SOUND\u003c\/strong\u003e We have always sought a different sound than our contemporary labels working in this musical area. Often others get either a rather 'flat' sound or try to 'rock it up'. We use the best engineers to create a 'big' open sound, as natural as possible. He picked up the name Hipstick as a child, and learned to play the guitar. He moved with his family to Louise, Mississippi at the age of nine to pick cotton and it was where he was exposed to the electric guitar. He and his friends hitchhiked to nearby Greenville and Indianola where he heard Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller), Willie Love and Boyd Gilmore. In 1956 he headed for Chicago and eventually landed a job as a paint sprayer. He bought a Gibson L5 electric guitar and began scouring the blues joints of the south and west sides looking to sit in and find a gig. He began playing with the likes of Dusty Brown, Willie Foster, Lester Davenport and Lee Jackson. He formed his own band the Chicago Twisters which included Tyrone Davis on vocals, his brother Jesse James Richard (aka Jug) on bass and Robert Campbell on drums, making his recording debut in 1959 backing Dusty Brown on Bandera Records with brother Jug on bass and Bob Richey on drums. The band held down a spot at the Silver Dollar Lounge sometimes supporting Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters. Hip has left us with a number of rare and obscure West Side blues 45s, some excellent blues albums and previously unissued material which is being made available here for the first time. For good measure included here are four sides by Chicago harmonica player Dusty Brown who is supported by Hip and his band recorded for Bandera Records in 1959. Dusty was born on March 11th, 1929 in Tralake, Mississippi and began playing harmonica at the age of thirteen. He moved to Chicago in 1946, recording his debut disc for Al Bensons Parrot label in 1955. Mike Rowe's account of Hound Dog's early years in his book 'Chicago Breakdown' is succinct: \"Theodore Roosevelt 'Hound Dog' Taylor was born in Greenville, Mississippi on April 14th 1916 (or possibly in Natchez on April 12th 1915). First, he tried the piano and then a cigar box guitar, to be replaced by the real thing, ordered from Sears Roebuck. He was nineteen and learned to play by watching musicians in Tchula, where he was then living. His big influence was Elmore James, but he names Lightnin' Hopkins and Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller) as other sources of inspiration and in fact he played with Sonny Boy on the King Biscuit programme. After some trouble in Mississippi he left to come to his sisters in Chicago.
