This is ambient music, but it's not background music. This is very much for the foreground. To be played loudly and to lose yourself in this world of sound.” The four tracks on offer present a different side to Gordon’s skills, the tracks are stripped of the usual soaring melodies and arpeggios of Warrington-Runcorn, but maintain the oppressive melancholy through tones and textures. “There’s quite substantial use of orchestral sound libraries on this” says Gordon. “I wanted to hear the sound of a bow scraping across a cello or the breath of a choir. What began as a deeply personal tribute to the region’s industrial, post-punk and synth-pop legacies has now evolved into a sprawling, 20-track remix project released via Castles in Space's new CD imprint, Lunar Module. The seeds for this release were planted when Sheffield trio Polyhymns delivered a mind-bending remix of Pulselovers’ track Kitchen in 2019—well before NM3 was even completed. From there, a full reimagining of the album slowly began to form, enlisting a dream lineup of collaborators from the extended Castles in Space network. The double CD includes remixes from a stellar cast of underground electronic artists including Polypores, Field Lines Cartographer, Fred und Luna, Apta, Grey Frequency, The Heartwood Institute, Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan and more. These reinterpretations span dark ambient, haunted synth-pop, minimal techno, kosmische and beyond—yet each remix holds onto the distinctive, coaldusted core of SoYo’s electronic heritage. The release follows a run of acclaimed volumes in the Northern Minimalism series, with Volumes 1 & 2 reissued as a 12” 45rpm mini album via the CiS Subscription Library in 2023. Northern Minimalism 3 also earned a spot on Gideon Coe’s BBC 6 Music Favourites of the Year list and charted at #36 on the Official Download Chart. The new album is shaped not by narrative or metaphor, but by sound for its own sake. Where many electronic releases lean on concept and story, Patterns in Condensate is instead a celebration of process, mechanics, and the musicality that emerges when tools are pushed, stressed, or left to speak for themselves. Across its tracks, the album explores the improbable pairing of Peter Blasser’s Plumbutter, an idiosyncratic “drum and drama machine,” and Roland’s JV-1010, a beloved 90s preset module brimming with lush pads, house pianos, and gloriously uneditable nostalgia. The album’s title—Patterns in Condensate—came from the literal condensation sliding down the inside of bedroom windows whose double-glazing seal had long since failed. As the artist notes, “it really is just meaningless sound”, with track titles simply referencing equipment, techniques, and patch names, just turned into something a little more readable. It is this resistance to symbolism that gives the album its character. By stripping intention back to bare mechanics, Patterns in Condensate reveals the expressive quirks, failures, and interactions of the instruments themselves—an exploration, rather than a story.

Sun Angle consolidates and deepens the contemporary sound that Solar 76 has been developing over the past few releases, inspired by and incorporating influences from tech and deep house from the mid-to-late 1990s, but also recalling—and infused with nostalgia for—currents of older movements in electronic music going back as far as the 1970s. The performance coincided with that year's Record Store Day so the shop was particularly busy, the room intimate and close-up, the perfect environment for Matthew J Saunders to weave his strange, evolving, electronic webs around the record-browsing patrons. “The challenge was to take along some looper pedals, a semi-modular synth, sampler, OP-1 synth and a bunch of effects pedals and make something cool without much of a plan. Some of these pieces had a germ of an idea pre-gig, some were entirely improvised from scratch in the moment.” Saunders is a seasoned recording artist and performer.
