Immediately after, Elverum became a father and then his partner fell ill with a fatal cancer and died a year later. These and other brutal waves of change kept pounding for years and it was all documented in the white knuckle songwriting on the albums \u003cem\u003eA Crow Looked At Me\u003c\/em\u003e (2017), \u003cem\u003eNow Only\u003c\/em\u003e (2018), and \u003cem\u003eLost Wisdom pt. 2\u003c\/em\u003e (2019).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAfter a natural disaster, things do grow back. A person catching their breath after a traumatic experience has a kind of reoriented clarity. Art that is made without urgency or expectation has a chance to reach beyond the usual. It was in this patient clarity that \u003cem\u003eNight Palace\u003c\/em\u003e came to be written and recorded from 2022 to 2024.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eElverum's life settled back down and he reassembled the old analog reel to reel studio at his quiet deep woods home and began experimenting again. \"I saw lighting last night, but heard nothing\", the first song's first words announce. Mystery is back! Over the next 80 minutes the songs weave our concrete reality together with the charged and rippling world beyond. Recorded fully analog on 24 tracks at the Unknown (the reclaimed old wood church in Anacortes, Washington), this is certainly the most “hi-fi” Mount Eerie album ever made, while still sounding as raw as low tide in November. What’s new here are the added layers of severely pitch shifted and autotuned voices singing newly written lyrics, almost like new songs layered over the old ones, expanding and clarifying the ideas. These songs keep growing, and here they are given new life in cascading walls of MIDI instruments with a voice digitally posing as a hoarse woman or a rough older man. These are strange tones. An alien wonder enters the room.
