Alex Brown Church — the man behind the dark folk, indie rock band Sea Wolf — wants you to know that from the start. Really. Sea Wolf’s eagerly anticipated fifth LP, Through A Dark Wood, due out March 20 via Dangerbird Records, proves it in 11 textured, sometimes-acoustic, sometimes-electronic, unabashedly honest tracks.
But beforehand, everything was decidedly not okay. Church wrote and recorded an entire album after 2014’s streaming-only, stripped down album Song Spells No. 1: Cedarsmoke, but decided to scrap it. He realized those songs lacked a through-line and felt conceptually disjointed, something he attributes to a sense of denial of what had been going behind the scenes — dealing with the disintegration of a long-term relationship, reconciling with the death of an estranged parent, and trying to cope with the magnitude of current events, all while maintaining a passionately beloved, yet slow-burning creative career.
So Church mustered his courage to go back to the drawing board. Starting from scratch, he spent months in his northeast Los Angeles studio writing, singing, tracking, and producing the new set of Sea Wolf songs that comprise Through A Dark Wood.
The result is a catharsis record, not merely a breakup record — one that highlights power in vulnerability and bravery in the face of fear. “I think a recurring theme of all of my albums has been this sense of hope,” Church says, “coming out of a dark place and into a light place.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/49d1b4ce-16a5-4665-a26d-9fa725d3e5d0_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727452652
sea-wolf
Sea Wolf

<colgroup><col width="71"></colgroup>

Alex Brown Church debuted Sea Wolf with the beguiling EP Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low, led by the single “You’re A Wolf,” a now-timeless classic of ‘00s indie. Sea Wolf’s body of work continues to comfort and inspire with lush arrangements examining human complexity with inviting warmth. 2007’s Leaves in the River was followed by White Water, White Bloom in 2009 as well as an appearance on the generation-defining New Moon soundtrack during peak Twilight which broadened an already devoted following.

After Old World Romance with its indelible single “Old Friend” in 2012, Sea Wolf took to self-releasing music before taking an extended break. We were thrilled to partner again when he returned with Through A Dark Wood in 2020. Released in a confusing time, the album is a gorgeous catalog of Brown-Church’s gifts as a writer and vocalist and the dynamic, filmic drama of his recordings.

Sea Wolf’s founder and leading man, Alex Brown Church (writer/guitar/vocals), shares “After the last record, which was written and recorded far from home and was more of a group experience, I really wanted to stay close to home, be in my own space and give myself room to explore and write and record on my own schedule,” Church continues, “I just felt I needed to bring Sea Wolf back to me, to my world,” Church produced and recorded Old World Romance in the comfort of his home studio, with mixing by Kennie Takahashi (Broken Bells, The Black Keys, Jessica Lea Mayfield).
