Mary Coughlan says: “After 40 years in this business and having reached a point in my life where I do a lot of this, looking back and replaying scenes from my life... and wondering…I walk around Galway sometimes and remember absolutely everything about growing up there. All of those events made me who I am. I'm easy with that these days. The good and the bad times. All the learning. After 40 years in this crazy business I'm still here and still working. I still love going to a studio and making music, I love playing music live. I hope you enjoy this album” Mary Coughlan’s career in music has been one hell-of-a-ride. Often described as the greatest female vocalist that Ireland has ever produced, Coughlan proudly stands alongside some of the world’s most iconic jazz singers. She is unique in blending whisky-blurred, smoke-seared, husky notes with the laconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee. She draws the line of deep, down and dirty blues singers back to Bessie Smith with the sardonic, bitter-sweet defiance and despair of Edith Piaf. Yet Mary Coughlan delivers it all in a delicious and unapologetic Irish drawl: sceptical, rueful, mournful and melting and ardent for love. Mary Coughlan is one of our greatest singers because over 40 years she has made the most grown-up, uncompromising, wholly personal yet utterly universal music on either side of the Atlantic about what goes on between men and women. It's hard to believe that four decades have passed since Coughlan went into the studio to record her debut album, Tired and Emotional. On new album Repeat Rewind, as the title might suggest, we see Mary at perhaps her most open, honest and introspective (‘Repeat Rewind’, ‘I Can Let Go Now’, ‘Really Gone’) – but not at the expense of her trademark humour and astute observations of everything from domesticity (‘Marital Bliss’) and relationships (‘Freefalling feat. Ultan Conlon’) to women’s traditional place in Irish society (‘More Like Brigid’). A cover of The Beach Boys’ ‘God Only Knows’ and a brand new seasonal offering, ‘Tinseltown’ will delight listeners and concert-goers alike, as Mary Coughlan celebrates four decades in music with this accomplished and heartfelt new album.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Repeat_Rewind_e8d5604a_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726678837
imagine-im-hoping
Imagine I'm Hoping

Paddy Hanna, Ireland’s best-kept indie secret, releases his fourth studio album Imagine I’m Hoping via Strange Brew.

There are few artists who could count Burt Bacharach and Fontaines DC amongst their fans but Paddy is one of them. But then the song ends looking back in a bit of a Hemingway situation, where you’re telling the story to someone and it’s like ‘It made you laugh, saw you smiling, that’ll do.’ See what I mean? Once a solo affair, this ever evolving musical project closer resembles a collaborative, ever changing community with frontman Marty Ryan as the driving force behind it. Since the project’s inception in 2014, Marty has amassed a loyal audience from playing over 350 shows all around the world in a DIY fashion. 2021’s A Glorious Ruction showed the creative potential of the band with a concept album that led the band to critical acclaim in Ireland in the U.K.

This latest offering from Anna’s Anchor shows a definite sonic and thematic shift. Often siding with melancholy, The Merries takes a 180 degree turn towards a hyper nostalgic feel both lyrically and musically. Born out of a fever dream of pain and uncertainty, Ryan suffered a scary head injury in 2022. Luckily he was fine and healthy but at the time, memory loss and long term issues were an initial concern. Marty wrote a list of important memories after the accident happened as a way to try and ensure he was alright and as a means to have an account of experiences that were precious to him. Strangely enough, none of these events had ever featured in an Anna’s Anchor song before which is strange in itself for a band that is 3 albums and a slew of EPs deep. With that, the concept of The Merries was born where Ryan backtracked and turned this list of events that were near and dear to him into the next Anna’s Anchor album.

Musically this is the most expansive offering from Anna ’s Anchor to date. Guitars, bass, drums and brash vocals do appear as would be expected from the band but The Merries also features more stripped back songs, synthesizers, found sound and spoken word. This album also features more individuals on it than pr evious releases with Brian Scally on drums, Clare O’Brien on backing vocals as well as lead vocals for the album’s closing song and even a guest appearance from Hermitage Green’s Dermot Sheedy on Bodhrán.
