Following years of avid field recording, Neil explains how it came about through a series of epiphanies: "It sort of started after I did a field recording introduction weekend workshop with the legend that is Chris Watson (the BBC wildlife team and ex-Cabaret Voltaire), just in terms of it being very inspirational and meeting like minded people. I've been sound recording for about 12 years now and have a good archive of sounds, and simply enjoy just listening and capturing the world. Since then over the years I've learned to really listen to the everyday soundscapes and as such I no longer walk down the street listening to a personal stereo anymore, the world can often be more exciting than music. A few memories of listening stick out which really helped form this album. I was walking up a hill in Norwich and a street cleaner was coming down pushing his cart, the broom attached to the cart but one end was bouncing up and down in the exact way a snare drum in a Dub reggae record might sound with the dub echo effect.. for a few seconds it was amazing and I stopped and stood still and just savoured the moment but of course did not have a microphone with me. Another time recording the dawn chorus in Lowestoft the chirping birds sounded intense coming from different trees and walking between the trees seemed to make the classic 303 acid squelch sound. part of this is in the middle section of the Babyloniacid track. Another time I was recording in a forest after a storm sitting under thick trees trying to keep the mics dry and the wind blowing the tops of the trees was like a swooshing synth line. I always liked the moments when the soundscapes felt like music and over time had a desire to marry music and field sounds together. Things really came together though when in summer 2022 I had a minor operation and was resting in bed after the operation, high on painkillers feeling quite spaced out. It was in the middle of a heat wave and the nurses had opened the ward windows, it was evening and I could see pink clouds but the sunset was out of view. I'd been listening to the Eno / Harmonia album and after that ended, I put on some Burial. I just lay there watching the clouds and the title Acid Field Recordings In Dub just came into my head... I could hear how the concept should be: made with field recordings, manipulating them and creating ambient soundscapes... dubby beats fractured in places and snatches of the acid 303. This is more or less what I wrote down that day and a few weeks later I started to create it... the process came easy and at first, I thought I'd need to spend some time making new extra field recordings but, to be honest, I has such an archive I pulled most of the sounds from that."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Audio_Obscura__Acid_Field_Recordings_In_Dub_595bae34_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726689993
night-scenes
Night Scenes

Felix Machtelinckx is a singer, composer, producer and lyricist from Belgium. Featuring an array of film scores, dance soundtracks, pop, folk and electronic music, Felix's music resonates with a familiar, almost nostalgic patina, applied with a distinctly crooked touch. Through artistic collaboration, coaching and production, Felix has cut a dash in the pop and indie cult scenes of Belgium, especially with his band Tin Fingers, who are feted as one of the most promising indie acts of the moment. Night Scenes, Felix’s solo debut is, in contrast to his other work, more humble and less traditional, roughly hewn from a series of ambient soundscapes, earthy textures and playful structures. Felix’s voice, normally the flagship of his music, becomes more of a distant memory, an indistinct emotion feathered throughout the music. Many lyrics are improvised, sometimes unintelligible, conjuring haunted, uncertain undertones. Similarly, the album is innately peripatetic to the core, being created, written and recorded in Lithuania, Belgium, France, mastered in the US, and finally released in the UK. In the first instance, some of the tracks were created for the contemporary dance piece Doggy Rugburn by Brandon Lagaert of Kaiho and Peeping Tom; others were created enigmatically for a film that never surfaced; while the remainder are the product of more personal work and research. As Felix began to collect and review these disparate parts, the concept of a unified album began to evolve. With 'night' featuring as a suitably dark leitmotif, or backdrop to a series of emotionally fraught 'scenes', each track depicts a form of trauma, locked within the confines of the mind. Felix observes: "Imagine yourself in a dusty old room unable to sleep. Emotions, fears and other demons haunt your mind. This in-between state makes your mind reach for other worlds. This is Night Scenes." For the most part, Night Scenes was created using a variety of old, and rare, analogue equipment. With almost no digital editing, the record was primarily mixed through a vintage cassette desk, giving it a nostalgic character with a noisy undertone. Felix fully embraced the synergy of his emotional themes and retrograde gear, enthusing: "A lot of textures were created on an old Soviet synthesizer that causes a blackout when you hit the lowest note on the keyboard. The dysfunctionality of the synths was often used to create rhythm and texture." This unnerving ability Night Scenes has to comfort and confound the listener is summed up by Jordan Hudson, House Of Media producer, and music podcaster, when he concludes: "Some songs on the album have this sort of fleeting comfort and tonality, which dissolves into a subtle rhythmic/structural or modulated disarray the moment I settle into them - this really fits with my experience of the night .. Following a series of inaugural EPs inhabiting the margins of dance music and metronomic rhythm, Desynclined takes an unexpected turn. Patterns become twisted, formulae disassembled, and a form of restless energy abounds, feeding off the inherent entropy of live improvisation. The seeds of this transition can be traced back to Miles' time at University, where studies in a variety of 20th century avant-garde music, coupled with the challenges of isolation in new and unfamiliar surroundings began to inform his own work: "The process of searching for something meaningful within chaos lead me to realize that pattern recognition is a primary characteristic of our species and is how people find meaning in life. I started Uni when I was 19, which was a very chaotic time because I had to effectively live the life of an adult before I really was one. My process at this time reflected my life in that I was searching for meaning and happiness within a lot of chaos and complexity. There’s a sense of angst and fear in the first half of the album as a result of the frustration of feeling out of control, and a sense of albeit melancholic peace in the second half as I was learning to find beauty within the new complexity." "Most of the tracks on the album were made almost exclusively with analogue equipment, because the way they worked suited my fascination with playing with texture and timbre .. I would sync my equipment with an analogue trigger, sending a noise signal into my sequencers to create utter chaos, and then gradually reduce the level of the noise signal so the original metronomic rhythm would gradually emerge .. The change from chaos to order would be so gradual that you wouldn’t notice a change until what you were hearing was vastly different to what you’d started listening to, causing a psychological shift of sorts." This psychological shift is key to Miles' work, as he actively tests the limits of our perception of rhythm and harmony. An idiosyncratic musical language flourishes, an unapologetic stream of consciousness, where the disturbing and the beautiful collide in unexpected and innovative ways. Born from the uncertainty of chaos, this feels like a formidable rite of passage in search of a brave new world.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Miles_Otto_-_Desynclined_031f58a3_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727004307
solstice-21
Solstice '21

Solstice '21 sees twelve bright lights of independent electronic music mark the coming Summer Solstice. Even though I have been involved in music production since 2002 and have taken part in several music projects, this is my very first solo album. But, at the same time, this is not actually a solo album in the literal sense of the term. It is an extensive work of collaboration, involving numerous musicians I have come to know, in various ways, over time. The album title is in fact "A Bridge Between Us", where the bridge is to be understood in a metaphorical sense: it is music (and art in a broader sense) that is a powerful means of connecting and sharing emotions and sensations between people with different sensibilities and backgrounds. Especially now, in this divisive era we are experiencing (due to the pandemic, war, economic crisis, etc.). Nineteen different European musicians, from different places, are involved in the project as guests. Each track of the album is a dialogue between me and one or more of them. The album has two souls, opposed and complementary, for a total number of 24 pieces! The first soul, named "Ethereal", is oriented towards ambient territories, with lo-fi piano parts, obscure soundscapes and almost no rhythmic parts. The second one, called "Concrete", is characterized by the constant presence of rhythmic elements and influenced by cinematic and Bristolian sounds. Knott is a former folk musician using his nascent acoustic influences as the basis for his unique and often stirring compositions. “I like weird folk art, and I think the stuff I make is a bit like that,” he explains. “It’s definitely not perfect – it's strange and a reflection of the time and place I live in.” Each one of the twelve tracks on Nightmare Folk Art finds itself poised on an axis somewhere between the acoustic and electronic, the rhythmic and the ambient, the minimalist and the densely-layered. Opener ‘Old Blue Bear’ sets the tone for the collection, switching breezily between introspective textures and fast-paced euphoria, underpinned by acoustic guitar passages that are skewed so extensively that they become disconnected from their sources. Melodies rise up joyfully, hang around, and then become enveloped in treated sounds of unknowable provenance. “I hunt down really clean royalty-free acoustic guitar samples,” says Knott. “I like nylon strings and clear, sparkly tones – the brighter, the better. I pick the source material based on how sonically good and warm it sounds as well as the clarity of the notes. It really has nothing to do with the musical phrase.” Knott then manipulates those plundered sounds to create the diverse sounds heard across Nightmare Folk Art. "My mantra is to destroy, create, then repeat. It’s really liberating, and I love working this way. I play acoustic fingerpicking guitar so I try to play my controller the same way. At the same time, audio is very visual for me: I get a glimpse of an abstract object in my mind's eye and try to get close to that, but I also like the feel of falling into a rabbit hole and not knowing where I might end up.” That sense of venturing deep into the unknown shines through on this album. Tracks like the chiming, shanty-esque ‘Acorn’ and the fluttering, elusive shapes of 'Mystic Scally’ and ‘Silly Song’ evoke a sense of wonder and awe akin to staring onto a new landscape or cityscape for the first time, leaving a transcendent mark on the listener. These are the sounds to accompany sepia-tinged memories, long-forgotten faces and misremembered places; regrets, reminiscences, hopes and dreams. “This album was influenced by my family, and walking in the countryside in Staffordshire and Cheshire,” explains Knott of the pastoral, ruminative quality that flows through Nightmare Folk Art. “I genuinely think that there's a spiritual side to this type of creativity. It means I can express deep feelings in a way that I simply couldn’t vocalise.” A warmth and hopefulness can be found here. ‘Sister Poppy Is A Good Girl’, named after the Knott family dog, carries a beautiful, celebratory sheen while the warped and churning drones of ‘So So So, Sad’ flits between optimistic promise and uncertainty, reflecting the state of mind that Knott was in when assembling the album. “The title came from a William Gibson book, ‘Virtual Light’,” concludes Knott. “I was reading that at the same time of making the album. There is a total rejection of the loop; instead the album develops an evocative language of its own, one which attempts to revive some of our earliest pulses as sentient beings but also one that is more suitable for the shifting structures of the dying stages of the second Elizabethan age. The title is an appreciative nod towards Doctor Who, in particular the third serial broadcast in 1964. The tracks progressively map out a collective narrative of threat and survival in a strange and uncertain world, with a strong folk horror element running through - as titles like ‘Hookland’ and ‘The Devil’s Arrows’ suggest. The human voice is absent from all but one of the album’s tracks, appropriately enough the title track, and those enumerations are like a countdown to some unstated and yet imminent disaster and are in Chinese (spoken by Wang Tiao) as if to demonstrate even further alienation (for English speakers at least) from the information which language would conventionally carry. Blending analogue, electronic and acoustic sounds, the album’s dark romanticism and gothic qualities are evident in the way familiar sounds are mixed with the more exotic and treated, and primitive elements have been combined with the melodic.

The aim was to present a sonically rich journey and one which it is pleasant to immerse yourself in, rather than the more avant-garde sounds the processes drawn from poetry and architecture might imply. The album is produced by John Pilgrim, a member of the inner sanctum of the Folk Horror Revival and whose approach to production is shaped by his longstanding interest in dislocated memories and unsettled landscapes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Foster_Neville_-_The_Edge_Of_Destruction_63658b6f_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727877399
unfortunes
Unfortunes

“I'm normally not a big fan of spoken word music. Around successive midnights over the next six weeks the tracks from Martin flowed and these good friends made enjoyable work of shaping words around music, and melding both into the audio scenes that make up this unusual project of which Unfortunes is the very first issue. With the first 10-track target reached, neither had any clear idea of quite what they had made, and probably still don’t. It came together without any theorising. Something in the connection kept sparking and lighting up the next step.

But any deeper reflection on the origins and mechanics of this creative process will surely lead back to the storytelling glow of cinema. Martin is a lover and collector of film soundtracks, and Peter has long been reminding Martin of the filmic flavour of a wide region of his music and its potential destination as part of films as yet unmade; Peter is a cinephile whose love of watching films takes away much of the little time he has to spend on making his own music. Well known for a raft of musical incarnations, including more lately acclaimed 'hauntological' musings as Jonathan Sharp, and The Heartwood Institute, this latest revision sees Sharp turn his attention to the evolution of town planning, where the intersection of civic and the personal proves to be fertile new ground. The Lanes shopping centre in Carlisle (a city in Sharp's native Cumbria, in the North of England) opened its doors in 1984, with the development proving to be controversial. While some welcomed the bright, airy new spaces replacing what was seen as a run down and dilapidated quarter of the working-class poor, others railed against these historic cobbled streets being swept away under a tide of comprehensive commercial development. Whilst the tone knowingly assimilates the bright, yet sterile language of the faceless council comms of postwar Britain, a nostalgic affection for what was lost haunts the melodies and refrains.
