It was recorded in Lexington, Kentucky, frst appeared on a record label in Japan, made its way back to Kentucky for release on a regional label that was later acquired by Rebel in the late 1970s. As Tony was working in banjo-great J. D. Crowe's band at the time, it was quite natural for Crowe, Tony's brother and mandolinist Larry Rice, and bassist Bobby Slone to provide the instrumental backing. Recorded at a time when progressive sounds and styles were treading on the traditional framework of bluegrass, "Guitar" was praised for walking the fne line of spotlighting Tony's prowess on the instrument while remaining very much a "band" recording.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/1aab1ba5-c5a0-4705-a3c0-715b6e64cb72_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726961091
native-american
Native American

The late, great guitarist Tony Rice grew up in a bluegrass family and learned to play at the feet of Kentucky Colonel and Byrd Clarence White. In the mid-‘70s, he joined J.D. Crowe’s seminal newgrass group The New South, thus launching one of the most celebrated careers in modern bluegrass, folk, and acoustic string band music. Along the way, Rice collaborated with David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Bela Fleck, Alison Krauss, Chris Hillman, Doyle Lawson, Norman Blake…the list goes on. This record, 1988’s Native American, is one of his most beloved, a beautiful blend of bluegrass, jazz, and folk featuring soaring interpretations of some of his favorite songwriters, like Gordon Lightfoot (“Shadows”), Joni Mitchell (“Urge for Going”), Phil Ochs (“Changes”), and Ian Tyson (“Summer Wages”). And on the more contemporary side, Mary Chapin Carpenter sings on the record and contributes a song (“John Wilkes Booth”) about the Lincoln assassination, long an obsession of Rice. He established the gold standard for both lead and rhythm playing, merging a deep appreciation for tradition with impactful innovation. California Autumn was Tony's first serious solo record, produced by the Seldom Scene's John Starling and mixed by the legendary George Massenberg. It was momentous for several reasons. It was the occasion of the initial meeting and first recordings of two of the brightest lights of Bluegrass's new generation: Tony and Ricky Skaggs; and it marked the first of Tony's many legendary recordings with a young Jerry Douglas.

The material included seven instrumentals that recalled the playing of Tony's mentor, the great Clarence White.
