Solo acts like \u003cstrong\u003eKaryn White\u003c\/strong\u003e (\"\u003cem\u003eThe Way You Love Me\u003c\/em\u003e\") and \u003cstrong\u003eJasmine Guy\u003c\/strong\u003e (\"\u003cem\u003eTry Me\u003c\/em\u003e\") followed in \u003cem\u003eJanet Jackson's\u003c\/em\u003e future-perfect footsteps, inspiring a bunch of female groups who followed in the early 90s. The initial ground-breakers were a Motown act called the \u003cem\u003eGood Girls\u003c\/em\u003e who were set up to be a swingbeat Supremes, with the wonderful \"\u003cem\u003eYour Sweetness\u003c\/em\u003e\" in 1989.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e1990 saw the emergence of R\u0026amp;B superstars \u003cstrong\u003eEn Vogue\u003c\/strong\u003e whose confidence and style proved that swingbeat wasn't just a genre for boy bands. \u003cem\u003eXscape\u003c\/em\u003e (\"\u003cem\u003eLove On My Mind\u003c\/em\u003e\") followed in 1991 while \u003cstrong\u003eSWV\u003c\/strong\u003e (\"\u003cem\u003eI'm So Into You\u003c\/em\u003e\") and \u003cstrong\u003eJade\u003c\/strong\u003e (\"\u003cem\u003eDon't Walk Away\u003c\/em\u003e\") both had their first UK hits in the spring of 1993. These hits were also pop classicist in their melodies and lyrics, harking back to 60's girl groups as much as they looked forward to the 21st century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\"\u003cem\u003eNew Jill Swing\u003c\/em\u003e\" has been compiled by \u003cstrong\u003eSaint Etienne's\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eBob Stanley\u003c\/strong\u003e and is historically significant as the first ever compilation of the genre. New Jill Swing may have borrowed from hip hop but it was more smartly stylized and consciously retro-modern in its look. It would also unwittingly lay down the groundwork for the ultra-modern sounds to come later in the decade from the likes of TLC and \u003cstrong\u003eMissy Elliot\u003c\/strong\u003e.
