riket
Riket

This album contains Leo Svensson Sander’s music for Helsingborg City Theatre’s production of Lars von Trier’s legendary TV series The Kingdom (Riket), directed by Malin Stenberg.
Dark, physical and strangely beautiful, the music inhabits the uneasy space between the absurdity of modernity, the vulnerability of childhood, and the oppressive presence of the hospital itself — damp, decaying and heavy with accumulated suffering. Beneath its polished surface, something seems to be growing: electricity humming through corridors, tunnels disappearing underground, elevator shafts descending into darkness. A world held together by order, while something uncontrollable slowly pushes through.

Svensson Sander’s score takes the shape of a fractured baroque music, where acoustic instruments and electronics collide. Strings, prepared cello, viola da gamba, synthesizers, electronics and boy soprano create a sound world that shifts between the intensely physical and the almost weightless — at once intimate, eerie, fragile and unsettling.

The result is music that can stand on its own outside the theatre: a haunted, tactile soundscape where old and new, human and mechanical, sacred and grotesque coexist.

Leo Svensson Sander is a Stockholm-based cellist and composer working across improvised music, pop, folk, contemporary music, film, theatre and dance.
