Plus soundtrack highlights from the directors who inspired him: Orson Welles and John Ford.

Peter Bogdanovich’s early films are regarded as integral to what would become known as the Hollywood Renaissance, New Hollywood or the American New Wave. Thrillingly modern, yet full of the spirit of classical American cinema. His documentary, ‘Directed by John Ford’, and book of interviews, ‘This is Orson Welles’, evidence the influence of those directorial giants on Peter and reveal his own deep love of the craft of film-making.

Discs one and two comprise the soundtracks of Peter’s two eloquent film essays in Americana; ‘The Last Picture Show’ (1971) and ‘Paper Moon’ (1973), alongside a programme of vintage 78rpm recordings of Cole Porter songs featured in his musical, ‘At Long Last Love’ (1975). Discs three and four are devoted to music from the masterpieces of Orson Welles and John Ford that fired Peter’s imagination; ‘Citizen Kane’, ‘The Magnificent Ambersons’, ‘A Touch of Evil’ and ‘The Searchers’.

Set in a small Texan town between November 1951 to October 1952, and made in black and white at Welles’ suggestion, ‘The Last Picture Show’ – nominated for eight Academy Awards and winning two – is regarded as one of the most poetic American films of the era. ‘Paper Moon’, another black and white feature, and another commercial and critical success, is an ingenious reinvention of the classic American road movie. It won a best supporting actress Oscar for 10 year-old Tatum O’Neal.

Contributing to the authenticity of both films, both have soundtracks comprising popular music of the era in which they are set.

Tracklisting:

DISC ONE
THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (1971)

1 Hank Williams – Why Don’t You Love Me (Like You Used To Do)
2 Hank Williams – Cold, Cold Heart
3 Eddy Arnold – Bouquet Of Roses
4 Hank Williams – Hey, Good Looking
5 Frankie Laine – Rose, Rose, I Love You
6 Pee Wee King – Slow Poke
7 Eddy Arnold – Anything That’s Part Of Love
8 Hank Snow – A Fool Such As I
9 Jo Stafford – Shrimp Boats
10 Tony Bennett – Cold, Cold Heart
11 Phil Harris – The Thing
12 Hank Williams – Lovesick Blues
13 Hank Thompson – The Wild Side Of LIfe
14 Hank Williams – Kaw-Liga
15 Johnnie Ray – Please Mr. Sun
16 Lefty Frizzell – Give Me More, More Of Your Kisses
17 Hank Williams – Half As Much
18 Eddie Fisher – Wish You Were Here
19 Tony Bennett – Solitaire
20 Kay Starr – Wheel Of Fortune
21 Tony Bennett – Blue Velvet
22 Joe Stafford – You Belong To Me
23 Hank Williams – My Son Calls Another Man Daddy
24 Hank Williams – I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You)
25 Webb Pierce – Back Street Affair
26 Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys – Faded Love
27 Hank Williams – Jambalaya (On The Bayou)
28 Johnny Standley – It’s In The Book (Part One)

DISC TWO
PAPER MOON (1973)
1 Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra – It’s Only A Paper Moon
2 Ozzie Nelson & His Orchestra – About A Quarter To Nine
3 Leo Reisman & His Orchestra – (It Will Have To Do) Until The Real Thing Comes Along
4 Dick Powell – Flirtation Walk
5 Bing Crosby – Just One More Chance
6 Jimmie Grier & His Orchestra – One Hour With You
7 Victor Young & His Orchestra & The Boswell Sisters – I Found A Million Dollar Baby
8 Jimmie Grier & His Orchestra – The Object Of My Affection
9 Hoagy Carmichael & His Orchestra – Georgia On My Mind
10 Paul Whiteman & His Orchestra – A Picture Of Me Without You
11 The Blue Sky Boys – On The Banks Of The Ohio
12 Jimmie Davis My Mary
13 Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra – After You’ve Gone
14 Enric Madriguera & His Hotel Biltmore Orchestra – Let’s Have Another Cup Of Coffee
15 Johnny Hamp’s Kentucky Serenaders – Sunnyside Up

COLE PORTER Vintage, 78rpm recordings featured in AT LONG LAST LOVE (1975)
16 Irving Aaronson & His Commanders Vocal: Phil Saxe and Chorus – Let’s Misbehave (1928)
17 Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, vocal: Ramona Davies – I Get A Kick Out of You (1935)
18 Richard Himber and His Ritz-Carlton Orchestra, vocal: Stuart Allen – Just One of Those Things (1935)
19 Bea Wain with Larry Clinton and His Orchestra – Most Gentlemen Don’t Like Love (1938)
20 Eddy Duchin & his Orchestra, vocal: Jerry Cooper – It’s De-Lovely (1936)
21 Lee Wiley with Bunny Berigan’s Music – Find Me A Primitive Man (1940)
22 Joseph Rines & His Hotel St Regis Orchestra, vocal: Joseph Rines – From Alpha to Omega (1938)
23 Ruby Newman & His Orchestra, vocal: Florence Case – Down In The Depths On The 90th Floor (1936)
24 Judy Garland and Johnny Mercer with Victor Young and His Orchestra – Friendship (1940)
25 Ozzie Nelson & his Orchestra, vocal: Ozzie Nelson – At Long Last Love (1938)
26 Paul Whiteman – You’re The Top (1935)

DISC THREE
ORSON WELLES
WELLES RAISES KANE – A Suite comprising themes from CITIZEN KANE (1941) and THE MAGNIFICENT
AMBERSONS (1942) Composer; Bernard Herrmann The CBS Symphony Orchestra, Conducted by Bernard Herrmann.
