After recording a handful of EPs and LPs for various US indie labels, including SST and Sub Pop, they signed to Sony imprint Epic Records for 1991's \u003cem\u003eUncle Anaesthesia\u003c\/em\u003e, co-produced with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eGeographically close enough to Seattle to benefit from the grunge scene that was about to explode with Nirvana in 1991, by the time they came to record \u003cem\u003eSweet Oblivion\u003c\/em\u003e in 1992, they had been joined by Barrett Martin on drums (REM, Mad Season, Queens Of The Stoneage and Walking Papers). Whilst retaining the psychedelic elements that characterised much of their early output, their second major label album certainly leaned further towards a more commercial, hard rock sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eProbably the band's most successful record, this was no doubt helped by the inclusion of lead single \"\u003cem\u003eNearly Lost You\u003c\/em\u003e\" on the 2,000,000 selling soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's grunge-era movie, \u003cem\u003eSingles\u003c\/em\u003e, thrusting the band into the limelight with the attention brought by the film, and an MTV-friendly video. Produced by Don Fleming, the album was mixed by Andy Wallace, who had brought a commercial sheen to the previous year's \"\u003cem\u003eNevermind\u003c\/em\u003e\" by Nirvana.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\"\u003cem\u003eNearly Lost You\u003c\/em\u003e\" was followed by the release of the more introspective \"\u003cem\u003eDollar Bill\u003c\/em\u003e\" as a single, with \"\u003cem\u003eShadow Of the Season\u003c\/em\u003e\" and \"\u003cem\u003eButterfly\u003c\/em\u003e\" also released as singles in certain international territories. This edition now features a number of non-album bonus tracks. \"\u003cem\u003eMaybe (Van's New One)\u003c\/em\u003e\" was sung by bassist Van Conner, whilst \"\u003cem\u003eE.S.K.\u003c\/em\u003e\" is an outtake from the album sessions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFamed Seattle producer Jack Endino had previously worked with Screaming Trees on 1989's \"\u003cem\u003eBuzz Factory\u003c\/em\u003e\" for SST and the \"\u003cem\u003eChange Has Come\u003c\/em\u003e\" EP for Sub Pop before he came back on board to record an acoustic version of \"\u003cem\u003eWinter Song\u003c\/em\u003e\", on which he guests on slide guitar. Prefiguring Americana, and to some degree a precursor to Mark Lanegan's solo album \"\u003cem\u003eI'll Take Care Of You\u003c\/em\u003e\", their cover of Thomas A. Dorsey's \"\u003cem\u003e(There'll Be) Peace In the Valley (For Me)\u003c\/em\u003e\" was released a full two years before Johnny Cash's \"\u003cem\u003eAmerican Recordings\u003c\/em\u003e\" comeback.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhilst their grunge-era peers hailed 70s punk and 70s metal as key influences, Screaming Trees' cover of Small Faces' \"\u003cem\u003eSong of a Baker\u003c\/em\u003e\" ably demonstrates where the band's musical heart truly lay. Again produced by Jack Endino, their cover of Black Sabbath's \"\u003cem\u003eTomorrow's Dream\u003c\/em\u003e\", originally from the \"\u003cem\u003eBlack Sabbath Vol 4\u003c\/em\u003e\" LP, rounds off this remastered 2CD collection in heavy style.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eScreaming Trees\u003c\/strong\u003e would release one further album, \"\u003cem\u003eDust\u003c\/em\u003e\", in 1996, before splitting in 2000.
