Kategorie: The Blackbyrds

The Blackbyrds were formed in Washington, D.C. in 1973, taking their name and initial inspiration from trumpeter Donald Byrd. Working at the meeting point of rhythm and blues, jazz and funk, the group’s classic line-up included Allan Barnes, Barney Perry, Kevin Toney, Joseph Hall III, Pericles Jacobs Jr. and Keith Killgo.

Between 1974 and 1980 they released seven original albums, including Flying Start and City Life, building a sound that was tight, polished and rooted in jazz musicianship without losing its groove. The group later reformed in 2012 under drummer Keith Killgo.
