Tommy Boy was founded in the US in 1981 by Tom Silverman and broke through with Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force’s Planet Rock. A key early hip-hop label, it helped carry urban street culture into the mainstream through crossover hits, while returning to independent ownership in 2002 after years tied to Warner.
