The Go-Betweens’ sixth album is widely hailed as their finest hour. Record Collector called it “almost universally acknowledged as The Go-Betweens finest hour”, while others dubbed it “the indie Rumours”. Ten beautiful love songs, full of romantic artistry, direct and timeless.
Robert Christgau praised it as “the straightest and catchiest bunch of love songs they’ve ever produced”, and it also earned a place in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Forster summed it up perfectly: “the perfect combination between London melancholy and Sydney sunshine.”
These remastered Beggars Banquet albums are on vinyl individually for the first time in over 30 years, alongside CD editions. Remastered in 2019 for Domino’s G Stands For Go-Betweens Anthology, Volume 2, they capture the band’s London years: Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (1986), Tallulah (1987) and Fountains Of Youth. Songs for 16 Lovers Lane were written around this time.
