There is a peculiar freedom that accompanies an upheaval. Even as change tears through the structures that once held us together, the wind flutters in and the mind begins to dance. Fine Food Market's debut album Alas Time Has Passed is an intimate and dynamic folk-pop cocktail narrating a new world.

Following a period of big changes—moving out on her own, leaving a long-term relationship, and squaring off her discomfort with solitude—Sophie Perras began looking around and asking, what is left now? She retraces her childhood memories in nine groove-infused vignettes, unintentionally reevaluating all the masculine relationships in her life, familial and romantic.

Recorded live off the floor in a cabin in the Laurentian mountains, the album carries the immediacy of its songwriting into the recording process. Each song assumes the form it requires– from country-inflected arrangements featuring pedal steel, fiddle, saxophone and a full choir, to stripped-back piano ballads.

Fun-loving pop hooks, playful turns of phrase, and theatrical melancholy coexist. Perras' charm lies in her emotional elasticity, balancing adventure and airiness with a stark sadness and sensitivity. Rather than resolving these tensions, the album embraces every mood, ultimately casting off any acute intensity in the pursuit of joy and expansiveness.
