Antiyano Progresivo

Antiyano Progresivo shines a light on the boundary-crossing music made across Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. It traces a close-knit scene shaped by shared histories and identities, yet too often overlooked beyond the Dutch Caribbean.

From the psychedelic funk of Sugar Ice Tea and Cryptus Confession to the Latin touch of visiting Puerto Rican star Mon Rivera, plus Surinamese-influenced soul and the garage rock of Los Honda, the islands nurtured a remarkable range of sounds.

Set against a fast-changing Caribbean, this music reflects the impact of oil, migration and tourism, alongside social division and rising cultural self-determination. Tambú, tumba, calypso, soul, funk, psychedelic rock, reggae, Latin music and pop all meet here, with African heritage, local languages and new identities resonating throughout.
