There is a ferocious Southern engine inside of Billy Allen + The Pollies' debut album Black Noise, marking a new chapter in the evolution of the "Muscle Shoals Sound." Like The Swampers before them, the band pulls from myriad influences in rock and roll, classic soul, and psychedelia to form a genre-defying sound all of their own. The band was forged during the pandemic of 2020, when Billy Allen and Pollies frontman and principal songwriter Jay Burgess began exchanging demos and writing songs together. As the lockdown loosened, more of The Pollies became involved, and a fun writing project evolved into a proper band. When it came time to make a proper record, they enlisted their friend and sometimes Pollie Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) and his studio in Florence, Alabama. The result is an 11-song instant classic that moans and wails and dances and celebrates, a stellar band fronted by one of the truly great voices in Southern music today.
