Maurice Starr discovered New Edition at a talent show at Dorchester's Strand Theater in the early 1980s. The Roxbury group finished second, but won a deal with Starr and Streetwise Records and began recording the next day.

Their debut single Candy Girl reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart and led to the album of the same name. New Edition's success paved the way for Bobby Brown's solo career, Bell Biv DeVoe and the boy bands that followed. Streetwise revisits this pivotal debut.
