Chapman's Pool

William Dorey, the prolific British multi-instrumentalist behind Skinshape, continues to refine a sound rooted in traditional recording methods. Drawing on influences from Ennio Morricone to The Beatles, he folds retro funk, soul, reggae, psychedelic rock, African music and folk into something open-ended yet carefully shaped.

Written between a heavy run of touring and sessions in his North London studio, Chapman’s Pool takes its name from a bay on Dorset’s Jurassic coast, close to where Dorey grew up. There’s a real sense of reconnection here, with nods to spaghetti westerns, trip-hop, ’60s and ’70s Ethiopian jazz, and ’80s South African bubble gum.
