Between 1953 and 1956, producers John Hammond and George Avakian recorded an amazing series of swing sessions, all of them having as its leader, trumpeter Buck Clayton, as the common denominator, plus star names that included Coleman Hawkins, Woody Herman, Al Cohn, Buddy Tate, Trummy Young, Urbie Green, Freddie Green, Milt Hinton, and Jo Jones.
Originally released on various LPs, all the original master takes from those sessions are contained on this magical 3CD set.
Born in Kansas City, Wilbur Dorsey "Buck" Clayton (1911-1991) is one of the best remembered swing trumpeters of all time. Although he began his musical career in Kansas, he left the United States from 1934 to 1937 to live and play in Shanghai. He was probably the first important jazz artist to gain renown in China, where he fronted a band along with Teddy Weatherford. Clayton returned to America before the second Sino-Japanese War and replaced Hot Lips Page as the principal trumpeter of the Count Basie orchestra. He would stay with Basie for many years, while also playing and recording with small groups under his own name. The studio jam sessions included here are among the best regarded highlights of his career.
