In November 2023, a year after Ghost Electricity/Vampire Draw!, Richard Edwards declared that “all recordings of note” would now belong to the Contrabandist series, a trilogy of rare tracks from his solo vault spanning 2015– 2023. The first release, Contrabandist Vol. 1, is as rare as the recordings it includes, blending incomplete demos, live bootlegs, and studio tracks like “Ain’t No Law” (featuring Anna Waronker) and “Meathead,” a porch-recorded demo with cars in the background. Its bathroom mirror selfie cover perfectly reflects the album’s intimate glimpse into Edwards’s creative brilliance — raw, unpolished, and unconstrained, yet unwavering in its songwriting quality.
