Newly remastered from original analogue masters, Bruce Springsteen's Darkness On The Edge Of Town reflects the pain of a protracted legal battle with his former manager. The release of being allowed to record again after a three-year layoff is equally evident in this album.
Betrayal and hard work that comes to naught are the primary subjects on his mind here, as shown in songs such as "Adam Raised A Cain," "Factory," and "Streets Of Fire." There are also signs of hope or at least the possibility of outrunning problems in tracks like "Racing In The Street," "The Promised Land," and "Prove It All Night."
However, the album mainly focuses on exorcising some serious demons. With Springsteen's loud, lonesome howl and blistering guitar work, it is clear that he was pushed to his absolute limit and was more than ready to push back. This is angry art, created by someone striving to make himself whole again.
