In the 1970s, Italian public television, RAI, aired dramas steeped in paranoia and unease, from stories set at the bottom of the sea to so-called educational films. Those images demanded equally striking music, often drawn from library soundtracks made by composers moving between avant-garde, electronics and Italian pop.
Some names are instantly recognisable, including Ennio Morricone and the legendary Piero Umiliani. But one of the brightest and most inspiring was Egisto Macchi, whose work sits right at the heart of this strange and captivating world.
ESP was a four-part television series produced by RAI in 1973, directed by Daniele D'Anza, and originally broadcast from Sunday, May 27 1973 to Sunday, June 17, 1973.
