Soft Machine was one of England's original psychedelic bands, emerging from the 'UFO Club' London scene alongside Pink Floyd. They toured the USA with the Jimi Hendrix Experience twice in 1968, performing over 60 shows as the opening act. The band disbanded after the Hendrix tours but regrouped in early 1969 with the trio lineup of Mike Ratledge (organ), Hugh Hopper (bass), and Robert Wyatt (drums/vocals), heading in a more jazz-influenced direction while maintaining their rock energy.
In the fall of 1969, Elton Dean (saxes) joined the band, solidifying what is now considered their classic formation. Soft Machine was among the earliest English jazz/rock bands. This CD and DVD set includes a previously unreleased live concert as well as the first-ever DVD release by Soft Machine, both featuring the classic lineup.
Grides includes a previously unreleased live concert recorded in Amsterdam on October 25, 1970, and a DVD from Soft Machine's final European tour with Robert Wyatt in 1971. The DVD captures a 20-minute set professionally recorded by a multi-camera crew.
