Zamrock was a full-blown 1970s Zambian rock movement, with records released on independent local labels and a sound all its own. Young musicians drew on European and American music, fusing fuzzed-out psychedelia, garage rock and funk with African rhythms, South African jazz, Afrobeat, acid folk, fusion and traditional Zambian melodies.
The scene was rich with groups like Musi O Tunya, Amanaz and the Ngozi Family. WITCH, Paul Ngozi and Amanaz didn’t sound like anyone else on the continent, or beyond it. This release captures that singular energy in vivid form.
Reissued by Now-Again as part of its essential Zamrock series running since 2010, this is the first commercial release of this Ngozi Family album, which previously only reached the test-press stage. It forms part of a wider campaign around Paul Ngozi and his band, licensed directly from the Estates of Paul Ngozi and Chrissy Zebby Tembo.
