Before George Clinton became a household funk name, he was cutting his teeth as a 60s soul entrepreneur, writing and producing for local New Jersey acts across various labels. Alongside his co-writers, he was also signed to Motown’s Jobete publishing arm.

This brilliant girly dancer, released on Joe Evans’ Carnival imprint, came out of that fertile period. It’s long been prized by collectors and DJs, with prices to match, especially given that singer Tamala Lewis also sang with the group.

The Pretenders’ 1980 uptempo disco take on It’s Everything About You I Love has earned serious rare soul attention, but the original by Lee Williams and The Cymbals now steps forward. Once seen as mid-tempo and easy enough to find, it’s become a real want as harmony group collecting has grown worldwide.
