Laswell / Shocklee: The Sam Huber Remixes

On the new album, Laswell-Shocklee: The Sam Huber Remixes, two of music's most influential, innovative and iconic producers unleash the musical equivalent of the space-time continuum, the ambient-soul-funk continuum. Across six expansive tracks Laswell and Shocklee take turns deconstructing and rebuilding tracks from Huber's latest album, Gravity-Insanity, as well as songs from some of his earlier releases, from the inside out. For those unfamiliar with Huber, the Helsinki, Finland singer has built a career cross-pollinating musical touchstones from the 60s, 70s and 80s into a timeless funky gumbo. He distills essences of everything from Berlin-era Bowie and vintage Philly soul to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Tom Jones into a consistent groove that pulls off the unique feat of being laid back and relentless at the same time. "It's all about the groove" Huber offers "that subconscious funk that hits you on a primal level and gets into your soul. I've always tried to have that, in some aspect, embedded in the DNA of every record I've ever made. I never even imagined having my songs worked on by legends like Keith Shocklee and Bill Laswell but when my producer, Tomás Doncker, brought the remix concept up I was incredibly excited.
