“There is music that provides answers. And there is music that has the courage to leave questions unanswered.” This is how Andrè Schuen describes the songs of Gustav Mahler. Ever since his first encounter with the “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” more than ten years ago, they have accompanied him throughout his artistic journey—as works that reveal themselves anew with every performance and continually illuminate different facets of the human experience.

 Andrè Schuen and Daniel Heide now present their first recording devoted to Mahler. The album brings together “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen”, “Rückert-Lieder”, “Kindertotenlieder”, and “Urlicht”—works in which Mahler gives deeply moving expression to questions of love and loss, memory, consolation, and the search for meaning. Over many years, the two artists have repeatedly explored this music in concert, continuously refining and developing their interpretation.

 The studio recording was made at the Markus Sittikus Hall in Hohenems, Austria, a venue of the internationally renowned Schubertiade festival of song and chamber music. The album is the result of an artistic dialogue that has evolved over many years—between singer and pianist, and with the world of Gustav Mahler’s songs.
