On Making American Music: The Smithsonian Sessions, Dom Flemons brings historic instruments from the National Museum of American History into a new musical setting. Performing solo, with his Black string band The Traveling Wildfires and with longtime Smithsonian staff, he gives fresh life to original compositions and traditional songs spanning two centuries.
Guitars played by Elizabeth Cotten and Mississippi John Hurt and quills made by Joe Patterson feature in a 21-track journey through folk, early jazz, blues, bluegrass, sacred music, Hawaiian steel guitar and beyond.
