Fennesz's most reflective album to date is Mosaic. Composed and recorded at the end of 2023 and completed in the summer of 2024, Fennesz set up a new studio space, the third one in four years.
With no immediate concept in mind, he started from scratch, following a strict working routine. He would get up early in the morning, work until midday, take a break, and then continue working until evening. Initially, he focused on collecting ideas, experimenting, and improvising. This process then evolved into composing, mixing, and correcting.
The title 'Mosaic' came early on, reflecting the methodical process of putting elements into place one at a time to create the full picture, akin to an ancient technique of image-making. This '9 to 5' working routine was a development from his previous album 'Agora' [Touch 2019]. Unlike his previous albums, which had breaks in between, 'Mosaic' was completed from start to finish without interruption.
Presented in a DVD-style case with artwork and photography by Jon Wozencroft, 'Mosaic' bears an echo to 'Venice' but with a more extreme contrast between the land, horizon, and deep blue sea, twenty years later. Mosaic sees Fennesz experimenting with unusual time signatures. For example, '"Love and the Framed Insects"' features a 7/4 time signature, while '"Personare"' draws influence from West African pop music of the 1980s.
'Goniorizon' initially consisted of six hard rock guitar riffs layered on top of one another, eventually morphing into something that opened up new possibilities. The result is a filmic, highly engaging, and beautiful score that encompasses diverse influences and offers multiple possibilities for the listener to explore.
