Mother

'Mother’ is the blistering debut 7-inch single from Wandering Summer, a noise-pop indie-punk band from LS6 in Leeds. Hailing from the underbelly of the tag-stained, takeaway rich streets of fun central in the West Yorkshire city, they fit somewhere between the scrawled urban terraces and their far-out sunny green dreams.

With a sound characterised by scratched fuzz, zealous reverb and indolence, Wandering Summer are influenced by both the indie-pop sounds of the USA and the Bay Area alt-pop movement. We’re talking about the likes of Sonic Youth, Mercury Rev, Flying Nun, Slumberland, the Glasgow scene and a myriad of feedback-drenched noise pop bands from previous decades.

Wandering Summer were brought together by singer-guitarist Geddy Laurance in the backwash of the pandemic. Ged drummed for Boyracer – Sarah and Slumberland records cult indie-punk favourites – and he’s also played bass and sung in oddball bands like City Yelps and Leeds slackers Wonderswan (on cult indie labels like Emotional Response, Odd Box, Dance to the Radio), while promoting mainly US alt-pop touring bands (The Umbrellas, Seablite, Jeanines, Sic Alps, Chime School) at his DIY gigs in the Leeds area. Ged hooked up with singer/keyboard player Helen Whale, guitarist Simon Guild (ex-Boyracer), drummer Dave Shields and bassist Lee Laverack to form Wandering Summer.
