Nathan Haines, a renowned musician from New Zealand, has announced his eleventh studio album and first solo album since 2014. Throughout his vibrant career, Nathan has solidified his status as a leading figure in contemporary jazz and electronic music. He is celebrated for his masterful skills as a saxophonist, flautist, and composer, known for his innovative fusion of jazz with elements of soul, funk, and dance music.
Notes maintains the jazz sound that Nathan is famed for, while also exploring the electronic/house and disco scene. The album was a labor of love that began several years ago in collaboration with the late UK producer Phil Asher, who had worked on Nathan's two most successful albums, Sound Travels and Squire For Hire. Phil, regarded as one of the finest DJs and producers from the UK, played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between 4/4 and broken beat. This album marked the first collaboration between Nathan and Phil in over eighteen years. Although Phil passed away during the recording, his spirit and influence can be felt throughout the entire release.
The album features guest vocalists such as UK soul-diva Vanessa Freeman, exciting young talents Ajuna Oakes, Ruby Cesan, La Coco, and EO from New Zealand. In addition to Nathan's own musicianship, the album also showcases bass from Jkriv and Mark de Clive-Lowe, bringing a wealth of collaboration and musicality to the project. Long-time collaborator Marc Mac and Nathan's father Kevin also contribute to the album.
Additionally, respected DJ and producer Frank Booker drops his signature beats on three tracks, complementing Asher's drum work. The album includes a cover of "Storm" by US 80's vocal group Rare Silk, featuring vocalist Rachel Clarke in an entirely acoustic rendition that stands out as a special moment artistically and musically.
In recent years, Nathan has continued to establish himself as one of New Zealand's best DJs and live performers, collaborating on releases and remixes with various artists. He recently released a solo album on Goldie's Metalheadz label under his Sci-clone alias, receiving excellent reviews and showcasing his talent and musicianship.
