Open Season

British Sea Power’s Open Season trades some of its debut’s wild eccentricity for a warmer, more polished sweep, without losing the band’s peculiar charm. “It Ended on an Oily Stage” opens brilliantly, all nervous energy and soaring guitars, while “Please Stand Up” and “Remember Me” deliver stirring, festival-sized choruses. Beneath the grandeur lies a wistful, autumnal mood, particularly on “North Hanging Rock” and “True Adventures.” It may feel less unpredictable than its predecessor, but the songwriting is stronger and the emotions land cleanly. Romantic, windswept and quietly triumphant, Open Season is British indie rock built to fill wide open horizons beautifully.
