Submarine Bells

The Chills’ second album, released in 1990, stands as their much-praised major label debut. Built around Martin Phillipps’ off-kilter vocal, it threads together folk-like couplets, brusque punk swagger and psychedelic colour with real ease.

There’s plenty of character here: all accent, all attitude, with songs that reel and shimmer in equal measure. It’s a record that still feels timeless, simmering beautifully decades on, and it opens with the effervescent, euphoric Heavenly Pop Hit.
