The historic collection produced and compiled by Orrin Keepnews captures Charlie 'Bird' Parker at the beginning of his storied career and presents studio recordings released on the New Jersey based Savoy label and Los Angeles based Dial Records between the years 1944 and 1948. The comprehensive and expansive repertoire showcases not only Bird at a crucial moment of his artistry, but is also is a document of vital performances from the likes of Miles Davies, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan and many others. This is undoubtedly the most ambitious Charlie Parker's compilation of Bird's recorded output of the incredible period during which this remarkable artist first made his presence permanently felt worldwide.

CD: As a bonus, this set presents two additional complete Charlie Parker sessions recorded for Guild in 1945, as well as an extremely rare date from that sameyear with trombonist Clyde Bernhardt and pianist Jay McShann from which only the original broken glass-based (and thus rather noisy) test pressings survive. Bird plays solos on all four sides.
