Warhorse was formed in early 1970 by former Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper. The band initially served as a backing band for singer Marsha Hunt and also featured Rick Wakeman. However, Wakeman left the band in April 1970 to join Strawbs.
Warhorse signed a licensing contract with Vertigo Records and released their self-titled debut album in November 1970. The band embarked on tours following the album release, but their lineup changed before recording their second album, Red Sea, which was released in June 1972.
After the release of Red Sea, drummer Mac Poole left to join Gong, and Barney James replaced him in Warhorse. The band continued until 1974, but vocalist Ashley Holt and Barney James eventually left to join Rick Wakeman in his band, The English Rock Ensemble.
The two albums recorded by Warhorse are considered fine examples of Progressive Hard Rock from that era. This collection includes both albums, as well as eleven bonus tracks consisting of demos and live recordings.
